Explore Dickens' classic tale of order and disorder, death and resurrection with A Tale of Two Cities. Taking place in London and Paris in the eighteenth century, in the years leading up to and during the French Revolution, Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities is one of injustice, revenge, rebirth, love, and sacrifice. Originally published in thirty-one weekly installments in 1859, this novel is uncharacteristic for Dickens as it lacks comic relief, as well as a protagonist, though London and Paris are considered to be the true protagonists of the story. The turbulence found in this epic tale is also believed to reflect the turmoil in Dickens' personal life at the time. Complete and unabridged, A Tale of Two Cities is an essential collectible that is both elegant and portable and features a new introduction by Brian Bartell. The Knickerbocker Classics bring together the works of classic authors from around the world in stunning gift editions to be collected and enjoyed. Complete and unabridged, these elegantly designed cloth-bound hardcovers feature a slipcase and ribbon marker, as well as a comprehensive introduction providing the reader with enlightening information on the author's life and works.

备用描述
A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel published in 1859 by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. In the Introduction to the Encyclopedia of Adventure Fiction, critic Don D'Ammassa argues that it is an adventure novel because the protagonists are in constant danger of being imprisoned or killed.
As Dickens's best-known work of historical fiction, A Tale of Two Cities is said to be one of the best-selling novels of all time. In 2003, the novel was ranked 63rd on the BBC's The Big Read poll. The novel has been adapted for film, television, radio, and the stage, and has continued to influence popular culture.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." So begins Charles Dickens's classic A Tale of Two Cities. Published in 31 weekly installments from April to November 1859, A Tale of Two Cities captures the tension and uncertainty of life in France during the French Revolution, and its corresponding parallels within London society. One of only two works of historical fiction by Dickens (the other being Barnaby Rudge), A Tale of Two Cities follows the lives of Charles Darney and his wife Lucie Manette, who are French aristocrats, and Sydney Carton, an English barrister in love with Lucie.

Annotation After rescuing her father from prison in Paris, Lucie Manette brings him back home to London. There, she is wooed by two similar-looking men: Charles Darney is a Frenchman recently acquitted of being a spy, while Sydney Carton is a drunken lawyer's assistant. Eventually, Lucie and Charles marry. Not long after the French Revolution begins, Charles is called back to Paris to help someone in prison. Unfortunately, Charles is the nephew of a cruel nobleman, and the revolutionaries sentence him to death for his uncle's crimes. Sydney's love for Lucie may be the only thing that can save Charles's life. This unabridged version of Charles Dickens's classic tale, first published in England in 1859, explores the best and worst in human nature
