Banking on Reform stresses the politics surrounding the choice of these institutions, specifically the motivations of political parties. Where intraparty conflicts have threatened the party's ability to hold office, politicians have adopted an independent central bank. Where political parties have been secluded from the political consequences of economic change, reform has been thwarted or delayed. The drive toward a single currency also reflects these political concerns. By delegating monetary policy to the European level, politicians in the member states removed a potentially divisive issue from the domestic political agenda, allowing parties to rebuild their support constructed on the basis of other issues. William T. Bernhard provides a variety of evidence to support his argument, such as in-depth case accounts of recent central bank reforms in Italy and Britain, the role of the German Bundesbank in the policy process, and the adoption of the single currency in Europe. Structural organization or disorganization in macromolecular systems has been an important subject of polymer physical chemistry in the past one or two decades. Our book focuses on recent advances in this subject, collecting contributions by distinguished theorists and experimentalists, who were invited to the third Osaka University Macromolecular Symposium OUMS '98 on Molecular Interactions and Time-Space Organization in Macromolecular Systems. This book covers such topics as crystallization kinetics, liquid crystals, phase separation, gelation, adhesion, complex formation, and self-organization, with emphasis on molecular interactions. Although those topics appear to spread over different specific polymer fields, our understanding of structural ordering on a molecular level requires common knowledge of molecular structures or conformations of individual polymers, intra and intermolecular interactions, and dynamic processes. This book emphasizes this fundamental point as indicated by its title, and it is unique in that it deals with a variety of static and dynamic properties of macromolecules in solids and solutions. The book will provide useful information on modern polymer science and also on fundamentals of industrial applications of complex polymer systems.

Mainstream accounting rules, namely International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), used in conventional banking, employ financial logics and principles which are at odds with Shariah and therefore unsuitable for reporting the results of Islamic banks. This book is an effort to explain the Islamic accounting principles and practices of Islamic financial institutions and juxtapose them to mainstream accounting principles in a simple and practical manner. The book begins with an overview of the Islamic finance environment, the rationale for Islamic accounting, and a brief introduction of AAOIFI (Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions), the professional body responsible for the issuance of Islamic accounting standards. The main features of the AAOIFI Conceptual Framework and its comparison with IFRS Framework are covered in Chapter 2. Chapters 39 cover the accounting treatment of the major Islamic finance products including trade-based (Murabaha, Salam, and Istisna'a), rental-based (Ijarah), and risk-sharing-based products (Mudaraba and Musharakah). Given the significance and complexity of Islamic bonds (Sukuk) for the Islamic finance industry, Chapter 10 discusses the basic accounting and reporting issues vis-vis Sukuk, leaving more complex issues for advanced texts on the topic. Zakah accounting (charity) and provisions and impairments are covered in Chapters 11 and 12. The chapters are arranged so that they start with a discussion of the product itself, followed by the AAOIFI accounting treatment, and ending with the IFRS perspective. Each chapter begins with the learning objectives and a cover story and closes with a summary of the concepts discussed in the chapter. To facilitate the learning of readers, each chapter contains a glossary of the terms introduced as well as multiple-choice questions at the end. In addition, each chapter includes practical insights and concept checks to enhance and test the understanding of the readers. This book will be a useful guide for students, academics, and practitioners concerned with the subject of financial reporting in Islamic Institutions.

To a surprising extent, Confino demonstrates, the mass murder of Jews during the war years was powerfully anticipated in the culture of the prewar years. The author shifts his focus away from the debates over what the Germans did or did not know about the Holocaust and explores instead how Germans came to conceive of the idea of a Germany without Jews. He traces the stories the Nazis told themselves—where they came from and where they were heading—and how those stories led to the conclusion that Jews must be eradicated in order for the new Nazi civilization to arise. The creation of this new empire required that Jews and Judaism be erased from Christian history, and this was the inspiration—and justification—for Kristallnacht. As Germans imagined a future world without Jews, persecution and extermination became imaginable, and even justifiable.
