lgli/Louis A. Del Monte - 天才武器:人工智能、自主武器和战争的未来.pdf
天才武器:人工智能、自主武器和战争的未来 Louis A. Del Monte Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, New York, 2018

End of Immunity: Holding World Leaders Accountable for Aggression, Genocide, War Crimes, and Crimes Against Humanity Chile Eboe-Osuji Rowman & Littlefield, 2024
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has shown the world the critical importance of whether and how to punish heads of state, heads of government, and sundry strong men when accused of crimes of aggression, genocide, war crimes, and other crimes against humanity. In End of Immunity, former President of the International Criminal Court, Chile Eboe-Osuji, probes the history and theory of the concept of immunity for heads of state, underscoring tribunal achievements, pointing out gaps in the existing framework of accountability and the hypocrisies that produced them, and offering workable solutions to the loopholes that government leaders still use to escape consequences today. Eboe-Osuji traces the development of international law from the pre-World War I era that left wars of aggression as the prerogative of sovereigns able to wage them through the peacetime conferences of the Hague at the turn of the 20th century, the momentous Article 227 of the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919, which communicated the resolve of the Allies and Associated Powers to prosecute German Emperor and King of Prussia Kaiser Wilhelm II before an international tribunal, how the legal norms applied in the post-WWII Nuremberg trial transformed the norms of modern international law, how 1990’s Africa breathed new life into arguments against immunity for heads of state, and how modern-day Russia flouts those laws with Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine. Going as far back as the Middle Ages and the ancient doctrine of the divine right of kings, and concluding with a fresh new proposal for the ways in which international law can be shored up to prosecute those leaders who wage wars of aggression, Eboe-Osuji investigates the journey of international law’s rejection of immunity for anyone – including heads of state in particular – when they are suspected or accused of atrocities that international law has proscribed as crimes. The result is the definitive account of a profoundly vital principle for international relations and global humanity.

The Ethics of teaching and scientific research Sidney Hook, Miro Todorovich, Paul Kurtz Prometheus Books, Publishers, PS, 1977

After the downfall of Senator Joseph McCarthy, it was assumed that the principles of academic freedom had become part of the common law of American higher education - honored in theory and, except for episodic and eccentric violations in the hinterland, scrupulously observed in practice. A decade or so later, as the climate of academia became heavily politicized and small but influential groups among students and faculties charged the universities with complicity in supporting the evils of racism, war, poverty and pollution, and demanded that the universities as corporate entities take public stands on controversial social and political issues, the principles of academic freedom were again problematic. With the eruption of violence on the campuses of leading universities, the issue became acute.

In the past, freedom to teach and to learn had been threatened by forces outside the academic community. Now these threats came from within. Among the consequences of the unprecedented turmoil, there developed a widespread concern with the restructuring of the curriculum, the governances of the university, and above all, the rights and responsibilities of members of the academic community. Of particular importance was the question of the nature of the teacher's vocation, and of the ethics of teaching. Because of political developments, and even more so because of the alleged dangers of certain types of scientific experiments to mankind, questions of the nature, justification and limits of scientific research challenged accepted conceptions of the autonomy of scientific inquiry in the social and physical disciplines.

This volume contains the deliberations of more than a score of thoughtful and distinguished scientists, philosophers, and jurists on the ethics of teaching and the ethics of research.

Christianity is not great : how faith fails John W. Loftus; Hector Avalos Prometheus Books, Publishers, Amherst, New York, 2014
In this new anthology critiquing Christianity, John Loftus—a former minister and now a leading atheist—has brought together an outstanding group of respected scholars who focus on the harms caused by the world’s leading religion. The contributors begin by dissecting the many problematic aspects of religious faith generally. They repeatedly demonstrate that, with faith as a foundation, almost anything can be believed or denied. And almost any horrific deed can be committed. The authors then take a good hard look at many of the most important political, institutional, scientific, social, and moral harms committed in the name of Christianity. These range from the historical persecutions of the Inquisition and witch hunts to the current health hazards of faith healing. Finally, the authors answer three common Christian retorts to criticisms from nonbelievers: (1) that atheists cannot judge a harmful action without an objective moral standard; (2) that atheists need faith to solve the world’s problems; and (3) that atheists cannot live a good life without faith. Loftus and the contributors generally conclude that, given both the well-documented historical record and ongoing problems raised by the faith, Christianity decisively fails empirical tests of its usefulness to humanity.

lgli/Mastery - ARTURO E. HERNANDEZ.pdf
Mastery: How Learning Transforms Our Brains, Minds, and Bodies Arturo E. Hernandez Ph.D. Prometheus Books, Publishers, US, 2024
To the outsider, an expert seems as if they are doing everything effortlessly. A master chess player, an expert golfer, and a prolific writer seem to be able to quickly home in on what needs to be done and execute flawlessly over and over again. How do we master new skills? How do our brains and bodies transform performance from novice to expert? In Mastery, Arturo E. Hernandez shows that new skills are not built but rather bloom from the combination and recombination of small parts that come to represent a new whole. The process by which smaller things are blended over and over again is one that is not just restricted to high-level experts. Uniting the latest research findings from a cross section of disciplines and case studies with compelling storytelling, Mastery shows readers how the blooming of abilities can work in their favor and lead them to achieve much more than they thought was possible. Whether mastering a new language, learning to play a musical instrument, improving your tennis serve, or sharpening your memory, Hernandez teaches readers how to take advantage of our adaptability and open our minds to their fullest potential. Rather than hyperfocus and overspecialization, moving our focus from rigid perfection to a form of flexible adaptation can lead to unexpected improvement. This approach to skill sheds light on how to better harness our talents so that we can accomplish things that are seemingly out of reach. For anyone looking to learn a new skill, teach someone else to do the same, or to better understand how our brains evolve and excel, this fascinating tour of cognition will reveal the path to surprising potential.

Writing God's obituary : how a good Methodist became a better atheist Anthony B. Pinn Prometheus Books, Publishers, Illustrated, 2014
A former African American minister revealshis unusual journey from faith to atheism.Anthony Pinn preached his first sermon at age twelve. At eighteen he became one of the youngest ordained ministers in his denomination. He then quickly moved up the ministerial ranks. Eventually he graduated from Columbia University and then received a Master of Divinity in theology and a PhD in religion from Harvard University. All the while, Pinn was wrestling with a growing skepticism. As his intellectual horizons expanded, he became less and less confident in the theism of his upbringing. At the same time, he became aware that his church could offer only anemic responses to theacute social needs of the community. In his mid-twenties, he finally decided to leave the ministry and committed the rest of his life to academia. He went on to become a distinguished scholar of African American humanism and religious history. The once fully committed believer evolved into an equally committed nonbeliever convinced that a secular approach to life offers the best hope of solving humanity's problems.Review“ Writing God’s Obituary is a story of liberation and redemption but not of the customary kind. Writing with eloquence and authenticity, Anthony Pinn shares his journey of deliverance from traditional religious practice. . . . His is a story that will appeal to anyone who has struggled with questions of faith or navigated the complexities of race.”—William F. Schulz, former president of the Unitarian Universalist Association “A powerful story of a spiritual journey from a boy evangelical preacher to a brilliant, intellectual humanist. This is a much-needed challenge to the faith of black Christians and others, especially theologians.”—James H. Cone , Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology, Union Theological Seminary, and author of A Black Theology of Liberation--This text refers to the paperback edition.About the AuthorAnthony B.
In this classic primer to the philosophy of religion, Antony Flew subjects a wide range of philosophical arguments for the existence of the Christian God to intense critical scrutiny. However, the rumour in some circles is that Flew - long-time advocate of atheistic humanism - has become a theist. Judge for yourself.

The Resurgence of Right-Wing Radicalism in Germany: New Forms of an Old Phenomenon? James Knowlton Humanity Books, May 1996

Rightist assaults on democracy have a long and malignant tradition in Germany. Recently, with the rise of neo-Nazi groups and the reemergence of xenophobia leading to attacks on immigrants, the problem once again assumes compelling topicality.

Is the new right-wing radicalism the same as the old? This series of essays examines the question. It looks at both the history and the current status of right-wing radicalism in Germany.

The collection starts with an examination of anti-Semitism as a constant of German politics and traces anti-Jewish attitudes throughout German intellectual history. Then come accounts of the rise of the Nazis after World War I and the cross-connections of the party to Munich's high society as well as its achievement of shaping an ideology that fascinated the middle class. The historical section closes with an examination of the Nazi success in eliminating the first German democracy and establishing a dictatorship.

The book looks at recent events by tracing the threat posed to the second democracy in the 1960s (seen as German susceptibility to antidemocratic and totalitarian ideas) and then by discussing current right-wing radicalism in a unified Germany as a product of postwar modernism.

The final essay closes the circle by comparing present-day xenophobia with Germany's historical hostility toward Jews.

lgli/Robert Graef - Ignorance (2017, Prometheus Books).epub
Ignorance : Everything You Need to Know About Not Knowing Robert Graef Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, 2017
Sums up the many fields of study where ignorance can undermine our understanding, while showing how an awareness of ignorance can lead to exploration and the discovery of new knowledge. The flip side of knowledge is ignorance. This book explores the vast scope of ignorance, even in an age when we think we know more than ever before. By marking off this ocean of ignorance into manageable categories, the author provides a kind of navigational chart to the unknown, and a series of red flags to all those who claim certitude. The book first lays out the many branches of ignorance—in education, the media, politics, religion, science, and other major institutions. It then assesses the costs and consequences of that ignorance. World conflicts, endemic poverty, environmental damage, waste, racism, and the manipulative forces of industry and politics that use propaganda to manipulate the public may all be seen as rooted in ignorance. But there are positive aspects of ignorance as well. Scientists and artists, by recognizing what they don't know, are spurred on to new creative approaches and discoveries, which would never be found by those too comfortable with the tried and true. The author cites Socrates, whom the Delphic Oracle declared to be the wisest of all people simply because he realized how much he didn't know. This book gives you ways to follow in the path that Socrates forged, to counter the closed minds whose false sense of certainty cannot help but distort reality, and to be better prepared to take on even the most serious challenges of today.

Dear mr. longfellow : letters to and from the children's poet Sydelle Pearl Prometheus Books, Publishers, 2012
If you were attending school in the late-nineteenth century, it's very likely that your teacher would have taught you to memorize lines from "The Village Blacksmith" by renowned poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. And on the classroom wall you'd probably see his portrait looking down benignly on you and your classmates. Longfellow was so famous and beloved by youth in this era that he was known as "the children's poet." Students not only memorized his poetry but sent him hundreds of letters. In this charming biography, storyteller and author Sydelle Pearl recounts the life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow by drawing upon the letters he received from his young admirers. In their letters, children from yesteryear reveal details about their lives that reach across the years to young people today. The letters also highlight the unique, close relationship that children shared with Longfellow. A girl from West Virginia writes, "Thank you so much for writing for children.... It makes us feel that we are not forgotten." Others ask him about what he did as a boy or a young man. In one extraordinary gesture of friendship, the schoolchildren of Cambridge celebrated his birthday by presenting him with a chair created from the wood of the "spreading chestnut tree" made famous in his poem "The Village Blacksmith." Longfellow dedicated his poem "From My Arm-Chair" to these thoughtful children. Complete with selected poems and photographs of the poet and his family, Dear Mr. Longfellow brings to life a famous figure of American literature and a distant, simpler age in the history of our country.

Operation Gladio : the unholy alliance between the Vatican, the CIA, and the Mafia Paul L. Williams Prometheus Books, Publishers, Amherst, New York, 2015
This disturbing exposé describes a secret alliance forged at the close of World War II by the CIA, the Sicilian and US mafias, and the Vatican to thwart the possibility of a Communist invasion of Europe. Journalist Paul L. Williams presents evidence suggesting the existence of “stay-behind” units in many European countries consisting of five thousand to fifteen thousand military operatives. According to the author’s research, the initial funding for these guerilla armies came from the sale of large stocks of SS morphine that had been smuggled out of Germany and Italy and of bogus British bank notes that had been produced in concentration camps by skilled counterfeiters. As the Cold War intensified, the units were used not only to ward off possible invaders, but also to thwart the rise of left-wing movements in South America and NATO-based countries by terror attacks. Williams argues that Operation Gladio soon gave rise to the toppling of governments, wholesale genocide, the formation of death squads, financial scandals on a grand scale, the creation of the mujahideen, an international narcotics network, and, most recently, the ascendancy of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a Jesuit cleric with strong ties to Operation Condor (an outgrowth of Gladio in Argentina) as Pope Francis I. Sure to be controversial, Operation Gladio connects the dots in ways the mainstream media often overlooks.

The chemistry of alchemy : from dragon's blood to donkey dung, how chemistry was forged Cathy Cobb; Monty Fetterolf; Harold Goldwhite Prometheus Books, Publishers, 2018
A unique approach to the history of science using do-it-yourself experiments along with brief historical profiles to demonstrate how the ancient alchemists stumbled upon the science of chemistry. Be the alchemist! Explore the legend of alchemy with the science of chemistry. Enjoy over twenty hands-on demonstrations of alchemical reactions. In this exploration of the ancient art of alchemy, three veteran chemists show that the alchemists' quest involved real science and they recount fascinating stories of the sages who performed these strange experiments. Why waste more words on this weird deviation in the evolution of chemistry' As the authors show, the writings of medieval alchemists may seem like the ravings of brain-addled fools, but there is more to the story than that. Recent scholarship has shown that some seemingly nonsensical mysticism is, in fact, decipherable code, and Western European alchemists functioned from a firmer theoretical foundation than previously thought. They had a guiding principle, based on experience: separate and purify materials by fire and reconstitute them into products, including, of course, gold and the universal elixir, the Philosophers' stone. Their efforts were not in vain: by trial, by error, by design, and by persistence, the alchemists discovered acids, alkalis, alcohols, salts, and exquisite, powerful, and vibrant reactions--which can be reproduced using common products, minerals, metals, and salts. So gather your vats and stoke your fires! Get ready to make burning waters, peacocks' tails, Philosophers' stone, and, of course, gold!

The author demonstrates that valid historical methods--not only in the study of Christian origins but in any historical study--can be described by, and reduced to, the logic of Bayes's Theorem. Conversely, he argues that any method that cannot be reduced to this theorem is invalid and should be abandoned. Writing with thoroughness and clarity, the author explains Bayes's Theorem in terms that are easily understandable to professional historians and laypeople alike, employing nothing more than well-known primary school math. He then explores precisely how the theorem can be applied to history and addresses numerous challenges to and criticisms of its use in testing or justifying the conclusions that historians make about the important persons and events of the past. The traditional and established methods of historians are analyzed using the theorem, as well as all the major "historicity criteria" employed in the latest quest to establish the historicity of Jesus. The author demonstrates not only the deficiencies of these approaches but also ways to rehabilitate them using Bayes's Theorem. Anyone with an interest in historical methods, how historical knowledge can be justified, new applications of Bayes's Theorem, or the study of the historical Jesus will find this book to be essential reading. From the Hardcover edition

Blood in the Water : How the US and Israel Conspired to Ambush the USS Liberty Joan Mellen Prometheus Books, Publishers, 1, 2018
Presents evidence suggesting collusion between US and Israeli intelligence in the attack on a US naval surveillance vessel during the Six-Day War and the more than fifty-year long cover-up. On June 8, 1967, the USS Liberty , an unarmed intelligence ship reporting to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the auspices of the National Security Agency, was positioned in international waters off the coast of Egypt when it was attacked with deadly violence by unmarked jet planes firing rockets and machine guns and throwing napalm onto its deck. This ambush was followed by a torpedo strike that blew a forty-foot hole in the starboard side of the ship. Lacking the capacity to defend themselves, thirty-four sailors were killed and 174 wounded, many for life. By the end of the day, Israel had confessed to having been the aggressor, simultaneously arguing that the attack had been an "accident" and a "mistake." The facts said otherwise. So intense and sustained was the attack - it lasted for nearly an hour and a half - so specific was the aiming for the antennae and satellite dish on deck, that it was scarcely credible that Israel's aggression was not deliberate; such was the view of Marshall Carter, the director of the National Security Agency, his deputy director Louis Tordella, and Richard Helms, the Director of Central Intelligence. Based on interviews with more than forty survivors, knowledgeable political insiders, and Soviet archives of the period, investigative writer Joan Mellen presents evidence suggesting complicity between US and Israeli intelligence in the attack on Liberty and the more than fifty-year long cover-up. What were the underlying motives? Was this a false flag operation conducted in the midst of the Six-Day War? Was it conceivable that Israel would have initiated such an operation without a green light from the United States? For the sake of justice, truth and the murdered and surviving sailors, this is a story demanding to be told.

The Castle in Cassiopeia (Dead Enders Book 3) Mike Resnick Pyr, an imprint of Prometheus Books, null, null, 2017
A crisis has arisen. On their first mission as a team, Pretorius and his Dead Enders kidnapped the real General Michkag and substituted a clone who had been raised and trained in the Democracy. But now they find that the clone likes being the most powerful man in the hundred-world Traanskei Coalititon—and having been raised on Earth, he knows how humans think and react. This becomes a many-layered problem for Pretorius and what is left of his Dead Enders. As the only humans on a totally militarized alien world, they must first find where the best-guarded member of the enemy's military - Michkag - is hiding and how many aliens, or regiments, or divisions, are guarding him, and then they must find a way past all his lines of defense to kill or capture him.

upload/arabic/New-Upload/English-ebook/The Blessings of Disaster - Michel Bruneau.epub
The blessings of disaster : the lessons that catastrophes teach us and why our future depends on it Michel Bruneau Prometheus Books, Publishers, Essex, Connecticut, 2022
Are we doomed? As individuals, certainly, eventually, inevitably. But as a species? As a civilization? Leading catastrophe engineer Michel Bruneau thinks perhaps not. The Blessings of Disaster draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines to illustrate how our civilization's future successes and failures in dealing with societal threats—be they pandemics, climate change, overpopulation, monetary collapse, and nuclear holocaust—can be predicted by observing how we currently cope with and react to natural and technological disasters. Maybe most importantly, this entertaining and often counter-intuitive book shows how we can think in better ways about disasters, to strengthen and extend our existence as both individuals and as a species. When it comes to rare extreme events, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornados, volcanic eruptions, technological accidents, terrorist attacks, pandemics, and even existential threats, it is in our nature to set ourselves up for disasters because the gamble may be worth it. But only maybe. The Blessing of Disaster is the very real story of the relationship between humans and disasters – and it's not a simple one. Bringing together his decades-long career spanning the globe as an earthquake and disaster engineer, detailed catastrophe case studies from extreme events like Japan's Kobe earthquake and category 5 hurricanes in the American South, along with thoughtful and practical solutions, Bruneau provides a thorough examination of the structural challenges that face today's (and tomorrow's) world. How we cope with today's threats is indicative of what the future holds. Contrary to popular forecasts, it is not all gloom and doom – but some of it definitely is.

In this prequel to The Bookseller, former FBI profiler Hugo Marston has just become head of security at the US Embassy in London. Hours later a distraught Harper gives Hugo the slip, and Hugo has no idea where he’s run off to. Taking cues from a secretive young lady named Merlyn, and with a Member of Parliament along for the chase, Hugo’s search leads to a quaint English village. Is this the work of a serial killer — or something else entirely? The Illusion of Certainty : How the Flawed Beliefs of Religion Harm Our Culture James T. Houk Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, New York, 2017
In this examination of religion's influence on society, an anthropologist critiques fundamentalism and all mindsets based on rigid cultural certainties. The author argues that the future can only be safeguarded by a global humanistic outlook that recognizes and respects differing cultural perspectives and endorses the use of critical reason and empiricism. Houk coins the term "culturalism" to describe dogmatic viewpoints governed by culture-specific values and preconceived notions. Culturalism gives rise not only to fundamentalism in religion but also stereotypes about race, gender, and sexual orientation. Turning specifically to Christian fundamentalism, the author analyzes the many weaknesses of what he calls a faith-based epistemology, particularly as such thinking is displayed in young-earth creationism, the reliance on revelation and subjective experiences as a source of religious knowledge, and the reverence accorded the Bible despite its obvious flaws. As he points out, the problem with such cultural knowledge generally is that it is non-falsifiable and ultimately has no lasting value in contrast to the data-based and falsifiable knowledge produced by science, which continues to prove its worth as a reliable source of accurate information. Concluding that there is no future to the fundamentalist mindset in a diverse world where religion often exacerbates conflicts, he makes a strong case for reason and mutual tolerance.

What is the Bible ? Lofmark, Carl Buffalo, N.Y.: Prometheus Books, Buffalo, N.Y, New York State, 1992
The Bible, undoubtedly the most widely read book of the Western world, has outsold every other book in the history of publishing. Despite its popularity and cultural importance as the foundation of Christianity and Judaism, few people have more than a superficial knowledge of the Scriptures. In What is the Bible? Carl Lofmark offers a synopsis of the basics of biblical scholarship and criticism. Designed for the reader with little or no prior knowledge of the subject, Lofmark's approachable, well-organized presentation cuts through the complexities of biblical exegesis and rationalist critiques, and outlines the basic structure, history, and inherent theological controversies of the Bible. The first half of Lofmark's discussion summarizes the essential facts of biblical how and when the various books of the Bible were compiled, a brief history of scriptural translations, the evolving understanding of the Bible's original languages, and how the various editions we know today were developed and codified across 2,000 years. The second half delves into major critiques of the Bible as an authoritative guide for its self-contradictions, its mixture of fact and fiction, the questionable and even deplorable morality of many biblical passages, the intellectual difficulties of literal or symbolic interpretation, and its inadequacy as a foundation for modern ethics. As an introduction to an important and often controversial subject, What is the Bible? will be useful to believers and skeptics alike.

The Healer Michael Blumlein Pyr;Start Publishing LLC, 2019;2011
Payne is a member of a minority offshoot of humanity called Grotesques, or Tesques, who are distinguished by a cranial deformity and an extra orifice in their chest. A small percentage of Tesques have the ability to effect phenomenal healings, which makes them a valuable commodity in their world. Sadly, such gifted healers live a life somewhere between that of a possession and a slave. Payne is unusual in that he is seemingly unaffected by the mysterious burn out (called'The Drain') that all other healers experience. The novel follows his journey across the strange landscape of his world in a search for an acceptance he may never find. Along the way, we move from the outskirts of society, to an isolated mining camp, to a metropolis dedicated to gambling and vice, to a secret government compound where the most dangerous of healings are performed. Finally, we climax in a scene where reality meets mythology, and Payne experiences a transformation that will forever alter the balance between Tesques and Humans. Blumlein brings his experience as a practicing physician to bear in this novel, which subtly and beautifully examines the ways in which society both reveres and fears members of the medical profession. The Healer is a story of human life and death, human rites and rituals, seen through the eyes of an outsider, one who knows humans better, perhaps, than they know themselves. In the vein of such authors as Jonathan Lethem and Jonathan Carroll, The Healer is literate, philosophical, entertaining, moving and original. From the Hardcover edition.

Russia Twenty Years After (Revolutionary Series) Victor Serge Humanity Books, Revolutionary Series, 1996
This is one of the most important documentary accounts of the Stalinist system written by the revolutionary novelist and historian Victor Serge. This was his first major work, written just after his harrowing release and expulsion from the Stalinist gulag, where he spent three years as an intransigent oppositionist to the Stalinist regime. Stalin nearly stilled Serge's voice, and in exile he, along with Leon Trotsky, took up the defence of those who were falsely accused and silenced. Twenty years before Krushchev's secret speech about Stalin's crimes, Victor Serge tried to alert the world to what Stalin was doing in the name of socialism in the USSR, to analyse how the Russian Revolution, which had been a beacon of hope for humankind, was in the process of devouring itself. Included in this edition is Serge's never before published (in English) retrospective of the Russian Revolution on its thirtieth birthday, "Thirty Years After the Russian Revolution", Serge's most eloquent summary and analysis of the Stalinist counterrevolution. The introductory essay by Susan Weissman, "Victor Serge: The Forgotten Marsixt", introduces the reader to Serge, evaluating his contribution to current understanding of the former Soviet Union. Susan Weissman also updates Serge's accounts of the fate of various oppositionists with information from the newly opened Soviet archives.

Partner to Power : The Secret World of Presidents and Their Most Trusted Advisers K. Ward Cummings Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, New York, 2018
A former congressional staffer and Capitol Hill veteran recounts the colorful history of presidential advisers, showing how influential these unelected appointees have been. This revealing book examines the relationships between U.S. presidents and their closest advisers from a psychological, personal, and professional point of view. The author, a Capitol Hill veteran, shows why such relationships are necessary, how presidents have employed them, how they have evolved over successive administrations, and why some believe they are not in the best interests of the nation. Cummings describes relationships that have sometimes been tense, such as the fractious association between George Washington and Alexander Hamilton; or complicated, as seen in the often-troubled understanding between Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton; or controversial, as in the influence of Vice President Dick Cheney on the decision making of George W. Bush. There have also been close friendships, such as the bond between Abraham Lincoln and William Seward; the long-term partnership of Franklin Roosevelt and Louis Howe; and, more recently, the trusting reliance of Barack Obama on Valerie Jarrett. Whether their connection with presidents was close or strained, these "partners to power" had an impact on some of history's most important moments and decisions. Full of interesting vignettes, insights, and little-known facts, this is a fascinating insider's account of the exercise of power at the highest levels.

Bioverse : how the cellular world contains the secrets to life's biggest questions D. B. D. Miller Jr. Rowman & Littlefield, Blue Ridge Summit, 2022
For as long as humans have been on Earth, we have looked up to the stars for clues to our own existence. Medical doctor and evolutionary biologist William B. Miller, Jr. suggests that we may find more meaningful solutions at the end of a microscope rather than a telescope. Using powerful analogies and exacting science, Bioverse explores the wonders of the perpetual partnership between our personal cells and the microbial world, resulting in an entirely new view of our living planet. To understand life in all its varieties, we must undertake to understand our cells. While the partnership between our cells and our microbes has largely been thought of as that of "host" and "guest," Millerrevealsthetrue partnership under which both our microbial fraction and our own personal cells conduct a life-long dialogue, redefining our traditional conceptions of intelligence and problem-solving. This radical new approach explains exactly how our human choices are centered within the same cellular rules that enable our cells to seamlessly sustain our lives. We are now entering the "Era of the Cell," a time in history during which medical and scientific innovations have spurred growth far beyond ever imagined by our ancestors. For the first time, we are not only building machines to enhance our lives but engineering living organisms to assist our futures. From the biological origins of evolution to the invention of the compound microscope by a Dutch lens maker in the 17th century, to new research that reveals surprising links between our microbiome and our moods and behavior, and surprising stories of the cellular world from the deepest oceans, wildest jungles, and outer reaches of our solar system, Millerintroduces readers to a greater understanding of our impact on the planet and the world's reciprocal impact on each of us. By exploring the extent of our deeply integrated cellular world, Bioverse provides profound insights about ourselves, our health and well-being, our social systems, and our permanent relationship to the planet and the cosmos.

Bureau of Spies : The Secret Connections Between Espionage and Journalism in Washington Steven T. Usdin Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, New York, 2018
Brings to light the long history of spies posing as journalists in Washington.Covert intelligence gathering, propaganda, fake news stories, dirty tricks--these tools of spy craft have been used for seven decades by agents hiding in plain sight in Washington's National Press Building. This revealing book tells the story of espionage conducted by both US and foreign intelligence operatives just blocks from the White House. Journalist Steven T. Usdin details how spies for Nazi Germany, imperial Japan, the Soviet Union, and the CIA have operated from the offices, corridors, and bars of this well-known press center to collect military, political, and commercial secrets. As the author's extensive research shows, efforts to influence American elections by foreign governments are nothing new, and WikiLeaks is not the first antisecrecy group to dump huge quantities of classified data into the public domain. Among other cases, the book documents the work of a journalist who created a secret intelligence organization that reported directly to President Franklin Roosevelt and two generations of Soviet spies who operated undercover as TASS reporters and ran circles around the FBI. The author also reveals the important roles played by journalists in the Cuban missile crisis, and presents information about a spy involved in the Watergate break-in who had earlier spied on Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater for then-President Lyndon Johnson.Based on interviews with retired CIA, NSA, FBI, and KGB officers, as well as declassified and leaked intelligence documents, this fascinating historical narrative shows how the worlds of journalism and intelligence sometimes overlap and highlights the ethical quandaries that espionage invariably creates.ISBN : 9781633884779

Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil (Contemporary Issues) Zubrin, Robert Prometheus Books, Publishers, Pbk. ed, Amherst, N.Y, 2009, c2007

in This Compelling Argument For A New Direction In Us Energy Policy, World-renowned Engineer And Best-selling Author Robert Zubrin Lays Out A Bold Plan For Breaking The Economic Stranglehold That The Opec Oil Cartel Has On Our Country And The World. Zubrin Presents Persuasive Evidence That Our Decades-long Relationship With Opec Has Resulted In The Looting Of Our Economy, The Corruption Of Our Political System, And Now The Funding And Protection Of Terrorist Regimes And Movements That Are Committed To Our Destruction. Debunking The False Solutions And Myths That Have Deterred Us From Taking Necessary Action, Zubrin Exposes The Fakery That Has Allowed Many Politicians--including Current Us President George W. Bush--to Posture That They Are Acting To Resolve This Problem While Actually Doing Nothing Significant Toward That Goal.

zubrin's Plan Is Straightforward And Practical. He Argues That If Congress Passed A Law Requiring That All New Cars Sold In The Usa Be Flex-fueled--that Is, Able To Run On Any Combination Of Gasoline Or Alcohol Fuels--this One Action Would Destroy The Monopoly That The Oil Cartel Has Maintained On The Globe's Transportation Fuel Supply, Opening It Up To Competition From Alcohol Fuels Produced By Farmers Worldwide. According To Zubrin's Estimates, Within Three Years Of Enactment, Such A Regulation Would Put 50 Million Cars On The Road In The Usa Capable Of Running On High-alcohol Fuels, And At Least An Equal Number Overseas. He Further Advocates Tariff Policies Favoring Alcohol Over Petroleum Imports.

energy Victory Shows How We Could Be Using Fuel Dollars That Are Now Being Sent To Countries With Ties To Terrorism To Help Farmers Here And Abroad, boosting Our Own Economy And Funding World Development. Furthermore, By Switching To Alcohol Fuels, Which Pollute Less Than Gasoline And Are Made From Plants That Draw Carbon Dioxide From The Air, This Plan Will Facilitate The Worldwide Economic Growth Required To Eliminate Global Poverty Without The Fear Of Greenhouse Warming. Energy Victory Offers An Exciting Vision For A Dynamic, New Energy Policy, Which Will Not Only Go A Long Way Toward Safeguarding Homeland Security In The Future But Will Also Provide Solutions For Global Warming And Third World Development.

After the Fact : The Erosion of Truth and the Inevitable Rise of Donald Trump Nathan Bomey Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, New York, 2018
This trenchant analysis examines the many ways our society's increasingly tenuous commitment to facts laid the groundwork for Donald Trump's rise to power. Award-winning journalist Nathan Bomey argues that Trump did not usher the post-truth era into being. He was its inevitable outcome. Bomey points to recent trends that have created the perfect seedbed for spin, distortion, deception, and bald-faced lies: shifting news habits, the rise of social media, the spread of entrenched ideologies, and the failure of schools to teach basic critical-thinking skills The evidence supporting the author's argument is all around us: On Facebook, we present images of our lives that ignore the truth and intentionally deceive our friends and family. We consume fake news stories online and carelessly circulate false rumors. In politics, we vote for leaders who leverage political narratives that favor ideology over science. And in our schools, we fail to teach students how to authenticate information. After the Fact explores how the convergence of technology, politics, and media has ushered in the misinformation age, sidelining the truth and threatening our core principle of community.ISBN : 9781633883789

lgli/John J. Binder - Al Capone's Beer Wars (2017, Prometheus).epub
Al Capone's Beer Wars : A Complete History of Organized Crime in Chicago During Prohibition John J. Binder Prometheus Books, Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Amherst, 2017
Although much has been written about Al Capone, there has not been—until now—a complete history of organized crime in Chicago during Prohibition. This exhaustively researched book covers the entire period from 1920 to 1933. Author John J. Binder, a recognized authority on the history of organized crime in Chicago, discusses all the important bootlegging gangs in the city and the suburbs and also examines the other major rackets, such as prostitution, gambling, labor and business racketeering, and narcotics. A major focus is how the Capone gang — one of twelve major bootlegging mobs in Chicago at the start of Prohibition—gained a virtual monopoly over organized crime in northern Illinois and beyond. Binder also describes the fight by federal and local authorities, as well as citizens' groups, against organized crime. In the process, he refutes numerous myths and misconceptions related to the Capone gang, other criminal groups, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and gangland killings. What emerges is a big picture of how Chicago's underworld evolved during this period. This broad perspective goes well beyond Capone and specific acts of violence and brings to light what was happening elsewhere in Chicagoland and after Capone went to jail. Based on 25 years of research and using many previously unexplored sources, this fascinating account of a bloody and colorful era in Chicago history will become the definitive work on the subject. From the Hardcover edition.
