Stèles = [Gu jin bei lu]. Volume 1 Victor Segalen; translated, edited, and annotated by Timothy Billings and Christopher Bush Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, First English critical edition of a bilingual masterpiece with facsimile and facing-page translation, Middletown, CT, 2007
Victor Segalen has come to be widely recognized in recent years as one of the luminaries of French modernism. Trained as a surgeon and Chinese interpreter, he wrote prolifically in a variety of genres. With this highly original collection of prose poems in French and Chinese, Segalen invented a new genre-the "stele-poem"-in imitation of the tall stone tablets with formal inscriptions that he saw in China. His wry persona declaims these inscriptions like an emperor struggling to command his personal empire, drawing from a vast range of Chinese texts to explore themes of friendship, love, desire, gender roles, violence, exoticism, otherness, and selfhood. The result is a linguistically and culturally hybrid modernist poetics that is often ironic and at times haunting. Segalen's bilingual masterwork is presented here fully translated, in the most extensively annotated critical edition ever produced. It includes unpublished manuscript material, newly identified sources, commentaries on the Chinese, and a facsimile of the original edition as printed in Beijing in 1914. Volume 2 of this work is available online at www.wesleyan.edu/wespress/segalen2 and www.steles.org.

Bright moon, perching bird : poems / by Li Po and Tu Fu ; translated from the Chinese by J. P. Seaton and James Cryer ; calligraphy by Mo Ji-yu : portraits and title page by Huang Yong-hou Li Po and Tu Fu; translated from the Chinese by J.P. Seaton and James Cryer; calligraphy by Mo Ji-yu; portraits and title page by Huang Yong-hou Wesleyan University Press; Distributed by Harper & Row; Brand: Wesleyan, Wesleyan poetry in translation, 1st ed., Middletown, Conn, Scranton, Pa, Connecticut, 1987
Li Po and Tu Fu, who lived in the 8th century, are considered Chinas greatest poets. When their paths crossed, for less than two years in the 740s, a friendship was formed that has lasted, in the hearts of lovers of Chinese poetry, for over twelve hundred years. These poets, and the poems in this book, express two sides of humankind, two kinds of longing and two kinds of life. The real Li Po was more like Tu Fu than the legend, and the real Tu Fu was enough like Li Po to idolize and perhaps love him. They are presented here together, separate but side by side, because, as twelve centuries of Chinese readers and nearly a century of Western readers already know, they belong together; they show the qualities of humankind, expressed as purely as men of the greatest genius can express them. Each poem is presented with the original and the translation side by side -- in the original Chinese with an appropriate style of calligraphy on the right side and its English translation on the left side of the page. Notes and suggestions for further reading appear at the end of the book.

Room Swept Home (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Remica Bingham-Risher Wesleyan University Press, PS, 2024
Intimate and sweeping poetry that examines race and lineage Room Swept Home serves as a gloriously rendered magnifying glass into all that is held in the line between the private and public, the investigative and generative, the self and those who came before us. In a strange twist of kismet, two of Bingham-Risher's ancestors intersect in Petersburg, Virginia, forty years before she herself is born: her paternal great-great-great grandmother, Minnie Lee Fowlkes, is interviewed for the Works Progress Administration Slave Narratives in Petersburg in 1937, and her maternal grandmother, Mary Knight, is sent to Petersburg in 1941, diagnosed with "water on the brain"―postpartum depression being an ongoing mystery―nine days after birthing her first child. Marrying meticulous archival research with Womanist scholarship and her hallmark lyrical precision, Bingham-Risher's latest collection treads the murky waters of race, lineage, faith, mental health, women's rights, and the violent reckoning that inhabits the discrepancy between lived versus textbook history, asking: What do we inherit when trauma is at the core of our fractured living? [sample poem] XI. the more ground covered, the more liberated you became I am scared my mind will turn on me. I am scared I will be naked in a burning house. I am scared my children won't outpace me. I am scared my children (who aren't made by me) believe I am a sad imitation of the others. I am scared I will gather in a room where everyone will ask me to remember and when I don't lie they'll say I'd hate to be you. I've lived long enough to be scared my kidneys will give out on me. I've lived long enough to know just when they should. I have never shared my fears with anyone; I am scared they will map the land and take liberties. Will the women be ashamed? I'm scared to ask. What will live again? What will die with me?

zlib/Poetry/General & Miscellaneous Poetry/Donna Stonecipher/The Ruins of Nostalgia_117578805.epub
The Ruins of Nostalgia Donna Stonecipher Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan Poetry, 2023
What is it to feel nostalgia, to be skeptical of it yet cleave intently to the complex truths of feeling and thought? In a series of 64 gorgeous, ramifying, unsettling prose poems addressing late-twentieth- and twenty-first century experience and its discontents, The Ruins of Nostalgia offers a strikingly original exploration of the misunderstood phenomenon of nostalgia as both feeling-state and historical phenomenon. Each poem, also titled The Ruins of Nostalgia, is a kind of lyrical mini-essay, playful, passionate, analytic. Some poems take a location, memory, conceit, or object as their theme. Throughout the series, the poems recognize and celebrate the nostalgias they ironize, which are in turn celebrated and then ironized again. Written often in the fictional persona of the first-person plural, The Ruins of Nostalgia explores the rich territory where individual response meets a collective phenomenon. [sample poem] The Ruins of Nostalgia 13 Where once there had been a low-end stationery store minded by an elderly beauty queen, there was now a store for high-end espresso machines minded by nobody. Where once there had been an illegal beer garden in a weedy lot, there was now a complex of luxury lofts with Parisian-style ivory façades. Where once there had been a bookstore and a bike shop and a bakery, there was now a wax museum for tourists. Where once there had been an empty lot there was now a building. Where once there had been an empty lot there was now a building. Where once there had been an empty lot there was now a building. Where once there had been an empty lot there was now a building. Where once there had been farms there were now subdivisions. Where once there had been subdivisions there were now sub-subdivisions. We lived in a sub-subdivision of a subdivision. We ourselves had become subdivided—where once we had merely been of two minds. * Where once there had been a river there was now a road. A vocal local group had started a movement to break up the road and "daylight" the river, which still flowed, in the dark, underneath the road. * Could we daylight the farms, the empty lots, the stationery store, the elderly beauty queen, the city we moved to? Was it still flowing somewhere, under the luxury lofts, deliquescing in the dark, inhabited by our luxury selves, not yet subdivided, because not yet whole? * Could we daylight the ruins of nostalgia?

lgli/Belly to the Brutal - Jennifer Givhan.epub
Belly to the Brutal Jennifer Givhan Wesleyan University Press,, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Connecticut, 2022
Belly to the Brutal sings a corrido of the love between mothers and daughters, confronting the learned complicity with patriarchal violence passed down from generation to generation. This poetry edges into the borderlands, touching the realm of chora—humming, screaming, rhythm—transporting the words outside of patriarchal and racist constructs. Drawing from curanderisma and a revived wave of feminist brujería, Jennifer Givhan creates a healing space for Brown women and mothers. Each poem finds its own form, interweaving beauty and devastation to create a pathway out of the systems that have for too long oppressed women. The poems dwell in the thick language of "motherfear," "where love grows too / in the shining center of the wound." This poetry of invocation moves toward a transformation of violence that is ultimately redemptive. Today I Learned the Word Mondegreen Which means to misinterpret from mishearing the lyrics in a way that gives new meaning as I have long misheard the homophony of my heart. I take it to mean the first flush of life after winter, that deep need to keep growing after all your once-bright blossoms have seeded or wilted away. Have you ever needed to lie flat as if dead against the rockmarked earth & listen to the voices licking against the sky your past shuffling through the leaves like a remix till you finally realize what your life has meant— & it aches? When the truth comes, let it come like jewelweed wilding beside the poison ivy. The antidote within our reach.

bury it (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Sax, Sam, 1986- author Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Connecticut, 2018
Winner of the 2017 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets Sam Sax's bury it , winner of the 2017 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets, begins with poems written in response to the spate of highly publicized young gay suicides in the summer of 2010. What follows are raw and expertly crafted meditations on death, rituals of passage, translation, desire, diaspora, and personhood. What's at stake is survival itself and the archiving of a lived and lyric history. Laughlin Award judge Tyehimba Jess says " bury it is lit with imagery and purpose that surprises and jolts at every turn. Exuberant, wild, tightly knotted mesmerisms of discovery inhabit each poem in this seethe of hunger and sacred toll of toil. A vitalizing and necessary book of poems that dig hard and lift luminously." In this phenomenal second collection of poems, sam sax invites the reader to join him in his interrogation of the bridges we cross, the bridges we burn, and bridges we must leap from.

Selected Poems of Calvin C. Hernton (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Calvin C. Hernton, David Grundy (editor), Lauri Scheyer (editor) Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Connecticut, 2023
The definitive guide to a major African American poet This volume promises to be the definitive guide to Calvin C. Hernton's unparalleled poetic career, re-introducing readers to a major voice in American poetry. Hernton was a cofounder of the Umbra Poets Workshop; a participant in the Black Arts Movement, R. D. Laing's Kingsley Hall, and the Antiuniversity of London; and a teacher at Oberlin College who counted amongst his friends bell hooks, Toni Morrison, and Odetta. As a pioneer in the field of Black Studies, Hernton developed a theoretical and practical pedagogy with lasting impact on generations of students. He may be best known as an anti-sexist sociologist, following in the footsteps of W.E.B. Du Bois, but Hernton viewed himself, above all, as a poet. This volume includes a generous selection of Hernton's previously published poems, from classics like the often anthologized "The Distant Drum" to the visionary epic The Coming of Chronos to the House of Nightsong, reprinted in full for the first time since 1964, alongside uncollected and unpublished material from the Calvin C. Hernton papers at Ohio University, a new critical introduction, and detailed notes, chronology, and bibliography. [sample poem] The Distant Drum I am not a metaphor or symbol. This you hear is not the wind in the trees. Nor a cat being maimed in the street. I am being maimed in the street It is I who weep, laugh, feel pain or joy. Speak this because I exist. This is my voice These words are my words, my mouth Speaks them, my hand writes. I am a poet. It is my fist you hear beating Against your ear.

Lineage of Loss: Counternarratives of North Indian Music (Music / Culture) Katz, Max; Wesleyan University Press, Music/culture, Middletown, Connecticut, 2017

In the middle of the nineteenth century a new family of hereditary musicians emerged in the royal court of Lucknow and subsequently rose to the heights of renown throughout North India. Today this musical lineage, or ghar n, lives on in the music and memories of only a small handful of descendants and players of the family instrument, the sarod. Drawing on six years of ethnographic and archival research, and fifteen years of musical apprenticeship, Max Katz explores the oral history and written record of the Lucknow ghar n ,tracing its displacement, loss of prestige, and erasure from the collective memory. In doing so he illuminates a hidden history of ideological and social struggle in North Indian music culture, intervenes in ongoing debates over the anti-Muslim agenda of Hindustani music's reform movement, and reanimates a lost vision in which Muslim scholar-artists defined the music of the nation. An interdisciplinary, postmodern counter-history, Lineage of Loss offers a new and unsettling narrative of Hindustani music's encounter with modernity.

In the air : essays on the poetry of Peter Gizzi Caleshu, Anthony Wesleyan University Press, 2017 Jan

This first critical book of essays on the poetry of Peter Gizzi shows how his work extends the traditions of nineteenth- and twentieth-century modernism while also reclaiming the living presence of the "lyric" in its capacity to sing of the human predicament. Gizzi is author of seven critically acclaimed books of poetry, including most recently Threshold Songs and Archeophonics, a finalist for the National Book Award in 2016. Lauded contributors, including Ben Lerner, Michael Snediker, Marjorie Perloff, and Charles Altieri, explore Gizzi's poetry for its embodiment of an American tradition—extending the poetics of Whitman, Dickinson, and Stevens, amongst others—while also exhibiting a twenty-first-century sensibility, perpetuating a new grammar and syntax to capture our place in the world today. Each essayist, in turn, works through close-readings of some of the most important poems of our times, enriching our understanding of a poetry of the mind which never loses track of what it means to feel.

Hardcover is un-jacketed.

suddenly we (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Evie Shockley Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Connecticut, 2023
Evie Shockley's new poems invite us to dream―and work―toward a more capacious "we" In her new poetry collection, Evie Shockley mobilizes visual art, sound, and multilayered language to chart routes towards openings for the collective dreaming of a more capacious "we." How do we navigate between the urgency of our own becoming and the imperative insight that whoever we are, we are in relation to each other? Beginning with the visionary art of Black women like Alison Saar and Alma Thomas, Shockley's poems draw and forge a widening constellation of connections that help make visible the interdependence of everyone and everything on Earth. perched i am black, comely, a girl on the cusp of desire. my dangling toes take the rest the rest of my body refuses. spine upright, my pose proposes anticipation. i poise in copper-colored tension, intent on manifesting my soul in the discouraging world. under the rough eyes of others, i stiffen. if i must be hard, it will be as a tree, alive with change. inside me, a love of beauty rises like sap, sprouts from my scalp and stretches forth. i send out my song, an aria blue and feathered, and grow toward it, choirs bare, but soon to bud. i am black and becoming. ―after Alison Saar's Blue Bird

Moving between worlds : a guide to embodied living and communicating Andrea Olsen Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Connecticut, 2022
Communication is a fundamental human activity, and as much as 90% of all communication is non-verbal. Yet awareness of embodied intelligence in communication is rare. This book is the fourth in a series by interdisciplinary educator Andrea Olsen focused on embodiment. Through the exercises and readings in this book, we can deepen our relationship to ourselves and others and improve our communication skills, moving between worlds: inner and outer; self and other; self and Earth. Each of the thirty-one chapters combines factual information, personal anecdotes, and somatic excursions, inviting the reader to explore multiple learning styles and lenses for finding balance in a more-than-human world. This guidebook is a valuable resource for anyone seeking practical tools for living and communicating with more ease and clarity.

How Charlie Shavers Died and Other Poems (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Shapiro, Harvey Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Conn, cop. 2001
With enormous wit and vitality, Harvey Shapiro's new collection of poems focuses on the approach of death, mingling canny observations of the city that never sleeps with homages to Hart Crane, George Oppen, the poet Rachel, and David Ignatow. Characterized by its focus on the urban world of New York, the Jewish tradition, and domesticity, Shapiro's poetry achieves a distinctive brilliance and true wisdom. These poems view life from the vantage of seventy-six years, deeply informed by the serious study of literature and language and always attuned to the present, as well as to the body, weather, and sex. With its passion, humor, and rich detail, this exquisite volume marks Harvey Shapiro's finest work to date.

In the grand tradition : the enduring art of Elbert Weinberg Hartford History Center (Hartford, Conn.), author; Finlay, Nancy, author Hartford, Connecticut: Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library, Hartford, Connecticut, 2018
"Elbert Weinberg, a supremely gifted sculptor, was widely regarded as one of the most promising young artists of the 1950s and 1960s. His sculptures are imbued with historical, literary, mythological, and biblical subtext and so belong to the grand art historical tradition. Weinberg's work can be found in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and his home city of Hartford, and in public and private collections across the United States and Europe. He is perhaps best known for his two Holocaust memorials in Wilmington, Delaware, and West Hartford, Connecticut. In 2014, the Weinberg Trust donated several of Weinberg's sculptures, many of his prints and drawings, a large collection of manuscripts, ephemera, and photographs documenting his work to the Hartford History Center at the Hartford Public Library. This in-depth analysis of the artist's most important sculptures includes a brief biography, two interpretive essays, and more than fifty illustrations documenting his life and work. An exhibit retrospective opens May 2018 in Hartford, Connecticut."--Provided by publisher

Converging Movements : Modern Dance and Jewish Culture at the 92nd Street Y Jackson, Naomi M. Author Lebanon: University Press of New England, 1st Wesleyan pbk, Middletown, Conn, 2002
A groundbreaking study of the 92nd Street Y and its major influence on 20th-century American culture. The Y located at 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City is the largest and oldest continuously operating YM-YWHA in the US. Many of the most important figures in modern dance premiered on its stage, but until now no one has thought to ask why this should have been so. As Naomi Jackson shows in Converging Movements, the Y's particular conception of Jewishness laid the groundwork for the establishment of a center for dance in the 1930s. William Kolodney, who served as the Y's education director from 1934 until 1969, expanded its educational and arts programming to include a great deal of nonsectarian material, and as Jackson shows, modern dance epitomized Kolodney's humanistic ideals regarding the uplifting role of the arts. Together with his dance advisors, most notably Doris Humphrey, John Martin, and Louis Horst, Kolodney oversaw a program characterized by a broad mix of Jewish and non-Jewish performers from Alvin Ailey, Katherine Dunham, and Ruth St. Denis to Anna Sokolow, Jos Limn, Erick Hawkins, Hanya Holm, Pearl Primus, and national and folk companies from Israel, the Philippines, Russia, Mexico, and elsewhere. Drawing on the Y's extensive archives and illustrated with rare photographs, Jackson's book locates modern dance at the heart of the Jewish encounter with America.

Icelight (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Ranjit Hoskote Wesleyan University Press, 2022
Icelight, Ranjit Hoskote's eighth collection of poems, enacts the experience of standing at the edge—of a life, a landscape, a world assuming new contours or going up in flames. Yet, the protagonists of these poems also stand at the edge of epiphany. In the title poem, we meet the Neolithic cave-dweller who, dazzled by a shapeshifting nature, crafts the first icon. The 'I' of these poems is not a sovereign 'I'. A questing, questioning voice, it locates itself in the web of life, in relation to the cosmos. In 'Tacet', the speaker asks: "What if I had/ no skin/ Of what/ am I the barometer?" Long committed to the Japanese mono no aware aesthetic, Hoskote embraces talismans, premonitions, fossils: active residues from the previous lives of people and places. Icelight is a book about transitions and departures, eloquent in its acceptance of transience in the face of mortality. AubadeRumours of wind, banners of cloud. The low earth shakes but the...

Toward Wholeness : Rudolf Steiner Education in America Mary Caroline Richards Wesleyan University Press Columbia University Press, Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Conn, 1980
For Rudolf Steiner, life can be truly understood only if it is experienced as art is experienced, as inner activities expressed through physical materials. On this ground of the union of inner experience and sensory life, he developed his unique, holistic approach to education. Richards views Steiner schools as expressing a new educational consciousness appropriate for our time, a'grammar of interconnections'among scientific observational, artistic imagination, religious reverence, and practical activity in which every part bears a deep connection.

Dance works : stories of creative collaboration Allison Orr, Liz Lerman Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Connecticut, 2023
Ride along with choreographer Allison Orr and her civic collaborators as they reflect on their dances together In 2001, Allison Orr made a dance with 13 City of Austin firefighters. Over the next 20 years, her unique practice of collaborating with city employees flowered into civic storytelling through movement at public pools, tableaus of power line workers shimmying up 40' poles in front of 5000 people, and intricate choreography of trash trucks on a misty tarmac. Part memoir, part guide, the artist reflects on her major collaborations and shares interviews with people she's made dances with over the past two decades. Power line workers, sanitation workers, and firefighters reflect on their memories of performing with Forklift and the lasting impact those dances made. Alongside larger conversations in the arts, Orr offers a look at how to create community-based art projects, how the creative process can bring people together to address civic issues, and the beauty of choreographing the day to day. An appendix and online companion include budget information, full cast and crew lists, participant survey results, and more.

Conjure (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Rae Armantrout Wesleyan University Press, Book collections on Project MUSE, First, Middletown, Connecticut, 2020
A Pulitzer prize-winning poet “offers a glimpse into her visionary world in her stunning 16th collection. . . . [D]eeply insightful.” ( Publishers Weekly , starred review) Like magic, these succinct poems reveal multiple realities Rae Armantrout has always taken pleasure in uncertainties and conundrums, the tricky nuances of language and feeling. In Conjure that pleasure is matched by dread; fascination meets fear as the poet considers the emergence of new life (twin granddaughters) into an increasingly toxic world: the Amazon smolders, children are caged or die crossing rivers and oceans, and weddings make convenient targets for drone strikes. These poems explore the restless border between self and non-self and ask us to look with new eyes at what we're doing. “In this volume, Armantrout addresses topics familiar from her earlier work: the nature of consciousness, aging, the looming ecological crisis, the vacuousness of much of what passes for public discourse.” ―Simon Collings, Stride Magazine “ Conjure offers a magic of its own, with sometimes sly and always unforgettable juxtapositions of the minute and the exceptional, elevated by the intellect, flair, and confidence of a poet at the top of her game.” ―Mandana Chaffa, Ploughshares “Unsettling, slippery intimations move just below the surface of Rae Armantrout’s enigmatic and unforgettable new collection of poems. For the record, Rae Armantrout is my favourite living poet.” ―Nick Cave

The Sleep That Changed Everything Lee Ann Brown Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, 2015

Offering both subtle and immediate pleasures, Lee Ann Brown's generous new book extends her unmistakable, original voice, every bit as Southern as it is avant-garde, gracious without being naive. Abounding in a playfulness of style, including songs and ballads, the poems in The Sleep That Changed Everything are by turns funny, serious, insightful and moving. Botanical and scientific language are used here as collage elements to chart cycles of desire and emotional transformation. Brown is committed to Whitman's idea that we all have many selves; thus her work embraces the immediacy of the New York School, the personal and literary wildness of the Beats, the word play and political astuteness of Language poetry and an eroticism all her own. In poems that are both highly literate and plain-spoken, Brown makes the life of the soul directly available in all its renegade garb.

Brother Poem (Wesleyan Poetry Series) Will, author Harris Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan poetry, Middletown, Connecticut, 2023
A speculative-poetic work from the Forward Prize-winning, T.S. Eliot shortlisted author of RENDANG At the heart of Brother Poem is a sequence addressed to a fictional brother. Through these fragments, Will Harris attempts to reckon with the past while mourning what never existed. The text moves, cloud-like, through states of consciousness, beings and geographies, to create a moving portrait of contemporary anxieties around language and the need to communicate. With pronominal shifts, broken dialogisms, and obsessive feedback loops, it reflects on the fictions we tell ourselves, and in our attempts to live up to the demands of others. From a dimension uncannily like our own, intuited through signs, whispers, and glitches, Brother Poem is shadowed by the loss of what can't be seen. Telling stories of bizarre familial reckonings and difficult relationships, about love and living with others, it is a deeply sensitive coming-of-age poetics.

Prudence Crandall’s Legacy: The Fight For Equality In The 1830s, Dred Scott, And Brown V. Board Of Education (the Driftless Connecticut Series & Garnet Books) Donald E. Williams Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Conn, 2014
Prudence Crandall was a schoolteacher who fought to integrate her school in Canterbury, Connecticut, and educate black women in the early nineteenth century. When Crandall accepted a black woman as a student, she unleashed a storm of controversy that catapulted her to national notoriety, and drew the attention of the most significant pro- and anti-slavery activists of the day. The Connecticut state legislature passed its infamous Black Law in an attempt to close down her school. Arrested and jailed, Crandall's legal legacy had a lasting impact—Crandall v. State was the first full-throated civil rights case in U.S. history. The arguments by attorneys in Crandall played a role in two of the most fateful Supreme Court decisions, Dred Scott v. Sandford, and the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education. In Prudence Crandall's Legacy, author and lawyer Donald E. Williams Jr. marshals a wealth of detail concerning the life and work of Prudence Crandall, her unique role in the fight for civil rights, and her influence on legal arguments for equality in America.A Driftless Connecticut Series Book, funded by the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Remainders of the American century : post-apocalyptic novels in the age of US decline Brent Ryan Bellamy Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Connecticut, 2021
Understanding US culture through the post-apocalyptic novel This book explores the post-apocalyptic novel in American literature from the 1940s to the present as reflections of a growing anxiety about the decline of US hegemony. Post-apocalyptic novels imagine human responses to the aftermath of catastrophe. The shape of the future they imagine is defined by "the remainder," when what is left behind expresses itself in storytelling tropes. Since 1945 the portentous fate of the United States has shifted from the irradiated future of nuclear holocaust to the saltwater wash of global warming. Theorist Brent Ryan Bellamy illuminates the political unconscious of post-apocalyptic writing, drawing on a range of disciplinary fields, including science fiction studies, American studies, energy humanities research, and critical race theory. From George R. Stewart's Earth Abides to N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season , Remainders of the American Century describes the tension between a reactionary impulse and the progressive impetus for a new world.

"Five Black Lives is a collection of ex-slave narratives which spans 150 years in time, from 1729 to 1870, and some thousands of miles in geographical area from Africa to Connecticut. The autobiographies include the lives of Venture Smith, a native of Africa who ended his days as a resident of East Haddam, Connecticut; James Mars, born a slave near Norfolk, Connecticut in 1790, and freed at twenty-five by state law; William Grimes, a native of Virginia, who became Connecticut's first known runway when he arrived in New Haven about 1808; G.W. Offley, from Maryland, who was bought free by his father and later settled in Hartford; and James L. Smith, of Virginia birth, who escaped from slavery and settled in Norwich, Connecticut. By limiting the collection to fugitive slaves who settled in Connecticut, the anthology has a unity not usually found in collections of fugitive slave narratives."-Victor B. Howard, The New England Quarterly

Walking In Stone (wesleyan New Poets) John Spaulding Middletown, Conn.: Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan new poets, 1st ed., Middletown, Conn, Connecticut, 1989
Remarkable poems exploring the relationship between the colonists and Native Americans. Colonists and Native Americans alternate in these poems of encounter between the intruding culture and the culture the colonist found. Walking in Stone refers to spiritual sources powerful enough to sink their footsteps into rock. Against such a background, John Spaulding finds voices of encounter (in a way he speaks for them by inheritancehis ancestors came to New England in 1750 and one married a Native American). His poems resemble journal entries, oral testimonies. The "knife people," the "iron men," as the Indians call them, come in "floating islands" across the sea. The colonists saw them as "wild people," "Satan's children." Separately and together in these powerful poems they suffer cold and pestilence, capture and slaughter, and although one is the military victor, both suffer spiritual loss.

Magic City Nights: Birminghams Rock n Roll Years (Music/Interview) Andre Millard Wesleyan University Press, Music:interview, Middletown, Connecticut, 2017

This exploration of rock 'n' roll music and culture in Birmingham, Alabama, is based on the oral histories of musicians, their fans and professionals in the popular music industry. Collected over a twenty-year period, their stories describe the coming of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, the rise of the garage bands in the 1960s, of southern rock in the 1970s, and of alternative music in the 1980s and 1990s. Told in the words of the musicians themselves, Magic City Nights provides an insider's view of the dramatic changes in the business and status of popular music from the era of the vacuum tube to twenty-first-century digital technology. These collective memories offer a unique perspective on the impact of a subversive and racially integrated music culture in one of the most conservative and racially divided cities in the country.

English in America : a radical view of the profession ; with a new introduction Richard Ohmann; with a foreword by Gerald Graff; and a chapter by Wallace Douglas [Middletown, Conn.]: Wesleyan University Press ; Hanover, NH: University Press of New England, 1st Wesleyan University Press ed., [Middletown, Conn.], Hanover, NH, Connecticut, 1996
A reissue of a controversial analysis of the literature profession. When it first appeared in 1976, this groundbreaking exploration of the influences of capitalism on the profession of English touched a nerve among educators and inspired Library Journal to declare, "This book should be read by all thoughtful Americans." Now, 20 years later, in a substantial new introduction that recontextualizes the book, Richard Ohmann addresses the critical furor over its initial publication, evaluates his own arguments in the aftermath of the Cold War, and locates the profession of English in the thick of the hotly contested culture wars. A remarkably prescient book whose claims have withstood two decades of fierce debate, English in America is widely considered to be as relevant today as ever. Wise, witty, and urbane, it has much to teach all students of English.

lgli/Gerry Canavan - Green Planets: Ecology and Science Fiction (2014, Wesleyan University Press).epub
Green Planets : Ecology and Science Fiction Gerry Canavan; Kim Stanley Robinson; Mindy Basinger Hill Wesleyan University Press, Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, 2014
Contemporary visions of the future have been shaped by hopes and fears about the effects of human technology and global capitalism on the natural world. In an era of climate change, mass extinction, and oil shortage, such visions have become increasingly catastrophic, even apocalyptic. Exploring the close relationship between science fiction, ecology, and environmentalism, the essays in Green Planets consider how science fiction writers have been working through this crisis. Beginning with H. G. Wells and passing through major twentieth-century writers like Ursula K. Le Guin, Stanislaw Lem, and Thomas Disch to contemporary authors like Margaret Atwood, China Miéville, and Paolo Bacigalupi—as well as recent blockbuster films like Avatar and District 9—the essays in Green Planets consider the important place for science fiction in a culture that now seems to have a very uncertain future. The book includes an extended interview with Kim Stanley Robinson and an annotated list for further exploration of "ecological SF" and related works of fiction, nonfiction, films, television, comics, children's cartoons, anime, video games, music, and more. Contributors include Christina Alt, Brent Bellamy, Sabine Höhler, Adeline Johns-Putra, Melody Jue, Rob Latham, Andrew Milner, Timothy Morton, Eric C. Otto, Michael Page, Christopher Palmer, Gib Prettyman, Elzette Steenkamp, Imre Szeman.

Hanya Holm : the biography of an artist by Walter Sorell Middletown, Conn.: Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Conn, Connecticut, 1979
KIRKUS REVIEW Hanya Holm is one of our country's leading modern dance innovators, instructors, and choreographers, probably best known generally for her work in such Broadway productions as Kiss Me Kate and My Fair Lady. This is graceful biography that contains much intriguing comment on the aesthetics and dynamics of the dance in general, illuminating, of necessity, the personality of Miss Holm who is virtually inseparable from her work. Born and educated in Germany, she evolved her theories of organic dynamicism from her studies with the then revolutionary modernist, Mary Wigman, known as ""the Eleanor Duse of the Dance."" Miss Wigman's style so impressed Sol Hurok that he persuaded her to open a school in America and the young Hanya was imported to start it. Miss Holm was sensitive to the lyricism and gawky freedom of American life and she incorporated it into her techniques based on enlightened improvisation. Soon her school and her performances were attracting wide-eyed critical attention. This is drawn from letters, articles, reviews, programs and interviews and a year of absorbing the work now underway in Colorado Springs. An adamantine artist, Miss Holm's approach and philosophy should both benefit and inspire. For a special audience.
