Fingersmith Waters, Sarah Penguin Books UK, Man Booker Prize Shortlist, 2002
Sarah Waters offers an intriguing blend of mystery and suspense, secrets and betrayal in her evocative Victorian underworld page-turner.London, 1862. Sue Trinder, orphaned at birth, grows up under the rough but loving care of Mrs Sucksby and her ‘family’ of unwanted babies turned artful dodgers - ‘fingersmiths’. When one of Mrs Sucksby’s scams places Sue as a lady’s maid to an orphan heiress in a sprawling Gothic mansion, the narrative explores even darker corners, among the pinched corsets and rustling skirts of Victorian England.“Oliver Twist with a twist...Waters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses. A pulsating story.” — The New York Times Book Review "This is a Victorian novel the Victorians never dreamed of writing. Yet Waters keeps reminding us of what they did write ... Metaphors about reading are scattered throughout the novel, suggesting the vicarious life Maud has to suffer while she is tied to her uncle's catalog of dirty books...Literature as enslaver, books as concealers of truth: Waters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses ... She writes great Gothic, her descriptive skill augmented by an acute ear for dialogue." - Tom Gilling, The New York TimesSarah Waters’ novels have won the Betty Trask Award and the Somerset Maugham Award and have been shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize. Her novels Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, Fingersmith and The Night Watch have all been adapted for television. Sarah Waters has been named Author of the Year four times: by the British Book Awards, the Booksellers’ Association, Waterstone’s Booksellers and the Stonewall Awards, and in 2019 she was awarded an OBE.

That Is All Hodgman, John New York: Riverhead Books, New York, 2012, ©2011
<p class="null1">John Hodgman-bestselling author, <i>The Daily Show</i>'s "Resident Expert", minor television celebrity, and deranged millionaire-brings us the third and final installment in his trilogy of Complete World Knowledge.</p> <p>In 2005, Dutton published <i>The Areas of My Expertise</i>, a handy little book of Complete World Knowledge, marked by the distinction that all of the fascinating trivia and amazing true facts were completely made up by its author, John Hodgman. At the time, Hodgman was merely a former literary agent and occasional scribbler of fake trivia. In short: a nobody.</p> <p>But during an interview on <i>The Daily Show</i> with Jon Stewart, an incredible transformation occurred. He became a famous minor television personality. You may ask: During his whirlwind tornado ride through the high ether of minor fame and outrageous fortune, did John Hodgman forget how to write books of fake trivia? The answer is: Yes. Briefly. But soon, he remembered!</p> <p>And so he returned, crashing his Kansas farmhouse down upon the wicked witch of ignorance with <i>More Information Than You Require</i>, a <i>New York Times</i> bestseller containing even more mesmerizing and essential fake trivia, including seven hundred mole-man names (and their occupations).</p> <p>And now, John Hodgman completes his vision with <i>That Is All</i>, the last book in a trilogy of Complete World Knowledge. Like its predecessors, <i>That Is All</i> compiles incredibly handy made-up facts into brief articles, overlong lists, and beguiling narratives on new and familiar themes. It picks up exactly where <i>More Information</i> left off-specifically, at page 596-and finally completes COMPLETE WORLD KNOWLEDGE, just in time for the return of Quetzalcoatl and the end of human history in 2012.</p>

FALL COLIN MCADAM New York, NY: Riverhead Books, 2009
360 pages ; 21 cm A place of pressure and contradictions, St Ebury is an exclusive boarding school for the children of Canada's elite, where boys must act as men while navigating their adolescence; a mixed school with only a handful of girls. Fall is the most beautiful. At night the bathrooms and beds hum with thoughts of her. Noel, a clever, ghostly loner, prowls the corridors at weekends, filling spare hours working on his body-building. Watching her, always knowing where she is and who she's talking to, he is certain that one day Fall will come to know him deeply. But like everyone else, she is drawn to Julius, the confident and magnetic son of the American ambassador to Canada. They fall in love. Noel keeps watching, happy to see them together. Fall deserves someone like that, for a while. At the beginning of their final year, the two boys room together. Julius grows physically closer to Fall, while Noel' boisterous enthusiasm shades into something darker as he imagines himself as a confidante to his popular roommate, sensing that the time has come for him to enter Fall's life for ever. A disturbing and unforgettable story of guilt, memory and confused identity

Making the case for yourself : a diet book for smart women Estrich, Susan New York: Riverhead Books, 1st Trade paperback ed., New York, New York State, 1999
Why is it that professional women can be so totally competent when it comes to taking care of business and so totally inept when it comes to taking care of themselves? Working women tend to put the needs of everyone around them, from their families and friends to their bosses and coworkers, ahead of their own health and well-being-placing themselves at risk by putting themselves last. Susan Estrich exposes these dangerous ways of thinking and other life-threatening habits as she makes a clear, compelling case for recognizing your body as your primary resource. Estrich brings her experience as both a lifelong dieter and a professor of law to the table, teaching you to think like a lawyer when it comes to defending your diet. She has anticipated every objection-from "I just don't have the time" to "I ate the donut because it was there"-and has the appropriate rebuttals at the ready. Estrich helps you to construct an argument that will keep you focused and committed until the results are their own reward. Beginning with a three-week commitment (you will actually be asked to sign a contract), she shows you how to play by your own rules, how to make a diet work for you, and how to identify your weaknesses and overcome them-just as you do in the rest of your life. Most of all, Estrich makes the case for investing wisely in yourself. Frank, funny, savvy, and empowering, <b>Making the Case for Yourself</b> is a diet book that engages your mind in the fight for your body.

The Grief of Others Leah Hager Cohen Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2011
The subtly powerful novel adapted into the 2015 feature film, The Grief of Others asks: is keeping a secret from a spouse always an act of infidelity? And what cost does such a secret exact on a family? From the acclaimed author of No Book but the World and 2019's searing new novel Strangers and Cousins. The Ryries have suffered a loss: the death of a baby just fifty-seven hours after his birth. Without words to express their grief, the parents, John and Ricky, try to return to their previous lives. Struggling to regain a semblance of normalcy for themselves and for their two older children, they find themselves pretending not only that little has changed, but that their marriage, their family, have always been intact. Yet in the aftermath of the baby's death, long-suppressed uncertainties about their relationship come roiling to the surface. A dreadful secret emerges with reverberations that reach far into their past and threaten their future. The couple's children, ten-year-old Biscuit and thirteen-year-old Paul, responding to the unnamed tensions around them, begin to act out in exquisitely- perhaps courageously-idiosyncratic ways. But as the four family members scatter into private, isolating grief, an unexpected visitor arrives, and they all find themselves growing more alert to the sadness and burdens of others-to the grief that is part of every human life but that also carries within it the power to draw us together.Moving, psychologically acute, and gorgeously written, The Grief of Others asks how we balance personal autonomy with the intimacy of relationships, how we balance private decisions with the obligations of belonging to a family, and how we take measure of our own sorrows in a world rife with suffering. This novel shows how one family, by finally allowing itself to experience the shared quality of grief, is able to rekindle tenderness and hope.

Fall Colin McAdam Vintage Books, Reprint, 2010-06-01
In the tradition of A Separate Piece, *a masterpiece of adolescent perspective, emotion, impulse, and relationships: the riveting story of two male roommates at a co-ed boarding school and what happens when the girlfriend of one of them goes missing during their final year. * From an internationally acclaimed, prizewinning author, whom critics have compared to Dave Eggers and Michael Ondaatje, comes a tour de force: a mesmerizing novel that is at once a spellbinding psychological thriller and a brilliant portrait of adolescence that goes deep into the heads of two very different boys. Awkward Noel thinks he's been allowed into the inner circle of his elite boarding school when he discovers his senior-year roommate is to be handsome, athletic Julius. Julius, in turn, cares only for the fleeting joys of teenage life: sneaking out to parties, playing pranks with friends, and most of all, spending the night with his girfriend, Fall. As Noel narrates this fateful semester from a perspective of many years, interwoven is Julius's own in-the-moment experiences of first love and male camaraderie. Always an outsider, Noel develops an unhealthy fascination with Julius, and his crush on Fall begins to border on a dangerous obsession. As Julius experiences all the pleasures of an eighteen-year-old in love, we watch as Noel self-consciously analyzes his interactions with Julius and Fall, convincing himself of a deep connection that might not exist. When Fall disappears close to winter break, Julius and Noel are forced to face their own inner desires, a confrontation that ushers the two boys out of the innocence of adolescence and into adulthood. A tremendous literary page-turner that perfectly captures the agonies and delights of adolescence,  Fall  is the exhilaration and angst of teenage love and friendship- and the ultimate transience of those feelings. **

Planting Dandelions : Field Notes From a Semi-Domesticated Life Kyran Pittman New York: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2011
Introducing a writer with a keen eye, a wicked tongue, and an appealing take on family. In the family of Jen Lancaster and Elizabeth Gilbert, Kyran Pittman is the laid-back middle sister: warm and witty and confiding, with an addictively smart and genuine voice-but married with three kids and living in the heartland. Relatable and real, she writes about family in a way that highlights all its humor, while at the same time honoring its depth. A regular contributor to Good Housekeeping, Pittman is well loved because she is funny and honest and self-deprecating, because her own household is in chaos ('semi-domesticated'), and because she inspires readers in their own domestic lives. In these eighteen linked, chronological essays, Pittman covers the first twelve years of becoming a family, writing candidly and hilariously about things like learning to maintain a marriage over time; dealing with the challenges of sex after childbirth; saying good-bye to her younger self and embracing the still attractive, forty-year-old version; and trying to'recession- proof'her family (i.e., downsize to avoid foreclosure). From a fresh new talent, celebrating the joys and trials of a new generation of parents, Planting Dandelions is an entertaining tribute to choosing the white-picket fence over the other options available, even if you don't manage to live up to its ideals every day.

With rare insight and inspiration, Brehony reminds us that compassion and generosity are qualities available to everyone-if we are willing to open our eyes and our hearts.

Freeing the Soul from Fear Robert J. Sardello Penguin Publishing Group, 1st Riverhead trade pbk. ed., New York, 2001
<p>Fear comes at us from politics, war, work, relationships, strangers, movies, and television. It keeps us from behaving intelligently, since the mind's first reaction to fear is to ignore danger, hoping it will go away. When fear takes over, it drives us to extremes of manic happiness or fits of rage; it pushes us to destroy relationships instead of letting relationships help us defeat it. When fear wins the battle, viciousness sets in, and we have miserable lives in a miserable world. Most important, fear keeps us from the one thing that could stop its taking over: becoming present.</p> <p>Robert Sardello, an exceptionally&nbsp;powerful&nbsp;writer who Larry Dossey deems "one of the&nbsp;few modern&nbsp;thinkers who genuinely senses how to deal with the barrenness of modern life,"&nbsp;argues that the soul's greatest enemy is fear. It is only when we can look honestly at every fear—from insecurity at work to existential angst—that we may fulfill its potential for kindness, love, and compassion.</p> <p>This book is at once an inspiring manual for dealing with fear and a&nbsp;call to arms to change our situation and thereby change the world. It is a rich combination of theory, anecdote, exercises for strengthening the soul, and the wisdom of a great student of the soul.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

The Coma Garland Alex Penguin, 2015
When Carl awakens from a coma after being attacked on a subway train, life around him feels unfamiliar, even strange. He arrives at his best friend's house without remembering how he got there; he seems to be having an affair with his secretary, which is pleasant but surprising. He starts to notice distortions in his experience, strange leaps in his perception of time. Is he truly reacting with the outside world, he wonders, or might he be terribly mistaken? So begins a dark psychological drama that raises questions about the the human psyche, dream versus reality, and the boundaries of consciousness. As Carl grapples with his predicament, Alex Garland - author of The Beach and the screenplay for 28 Days Later, plays with conventions and questions our assumptions about the way we exist in the world, even as it draws us into the unsettling and haunting book about a lost suitcase and a forgotten identity.**Formats : EPUB

Prairie Reunion Scot, Barbara J. Berkley Publishing, 1st Riverhead ed., New York, New York State, 1997
Part memoir, part social and cultural history, part ecological exploration, Prairie Reunion takes writer Barbara Scot to Scotch Grove, Iowa, the small farming community of her childhood where she succeeds in coming to terms with her parents' legacy, a bittersweet history that involves love, abandonment, and suicide. In 1943, Scot's mother, a young Iowa farm wife, was deserted by her husband. He left behind two small children and a mountain of debts. Through the poetry of Scot's description, the prairie setting in which her parents' tragedy unfolded provides a majestic backdrop for a journey through family, place, and time. With exquisite tenderness and insight, Scot relives her childhood. She re-evaluates her parents' lives in the light of her own experience, and in light of the community's religious and social history, and in terms of the land itself. With modesty and grace, Prairie Reunion tells a universal story of age-old heartache and how that heartache can be assuaged and absorbed into a living present. It is a work of enormous power and resonance that will speak hauntingly to every daughter and son. <p>This part memoir, part social and cultural history, part ecological exploration takes writer Barbara Scot back to the small Iowa farming community of her childhood, where she succeeds in coming to terms with her parents' legacy of bittersweet love, abandonment, and suicide. Prairie Reunion is a work of enormous power and resonance that will speak hauntingly to every daughter and son. </p>

Forever Blue : The True Story of Walter O'Malley, Baseball's Most Controversial Owner, and the Dodgers of Brooklyn and Los Angeles Michael D'Antonio New York: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2009
Read Michael D'Antonio's posts on the Penguin BlogFrom the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist comes a revealing biography of'one of the most polarizing figures in baseball history'(The New York Times). If ever there was a figure who changed the game of baseball, it was Walter O'Malley, owner of the Dodgers. O'Malley was one of the most controversial owners in the history of American sports, altering the course of history when he uprooted the Dodgers and transplanted them from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. While many critics attacked him, O'Malley looked to the future, declining to defend his stance. As a result, fans across the nation have never been able to stop arguing about him and his strategy–until now. Michael D'Antonio's Forever Blue is a uniquely intimate portrait of a man who changed America's pastime forever, a fascinating story fundamental to the history of sports, business, and the American West.Michael D'Antonio's newest book, A Full Cup: Sir Thomas Lipton's Extraordinary Life and His Quest for America's Cup, is now available from Riverhead Books.

The chess garden, or, The twilight letters of Gustav Uyterhoeven Brooks Hansen; with illustrations by Miles Hyman Riverhead Trade (Paperbacks), 1st Riverhead trade pbk. ed., New York, New York State, 1996
In the fall of 1900, Dr. Gustav Uyterhoeven left the chess garden that he and his wife, Sonja, had created together in Dayton, Ohio, and journeyed to South Africa to serve as a doctor in the British concentration camps of the Boer War. Over the next ten months he sent twelve chess pieces and twelve letters back to Sonja. She set out her husband's gifts as they arrived and welcomed all the most faithful guests of the garden to come and hear what he had written - letters which told nothing of his experience of the camps but described an imagined land called the Antipodes, where all the game pieces that cluttered the sets and drawers of the garden collection came to life to guide the doctor through his fateful and wondrous last adventure. Brooks Hansen offers a tale of spiritual progress disguised in the most exotic visions of the imagination. And yet The Chess Garden encompasses a very real world, too. Alongside the doctor's visions of the Antipodes, the story of his life gradually unfolds as well. History and allegory are expertly woven until finally both lead back to the chess garden itself, a place where ideas give way to vision, reason meets faith, and fact and figment are finally reconciled.

Foreskin's Lament : A Memoir Shalom Auslander New York: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2007
A New York Times Notable Book, and a “chaotic, laugh riot” (San Francisco Chronicle) of a memoir. Shalom Auslander was raised with a terrified respect for God. Even as he grew up and was estranged from his community, his religion and its traditions, he could not find the path to a life where he didn't struggle daily with the fear of God's formidable wrath. Foreskin's Lament reveals Auslander's “painfully, cripplingly, incurably, miserably religious” youth in a strict, socially isolated Orthodox Jewish community, and recounts his rebellion and efforts to make a new life apart from it. His combination of unrelenting humor and anger renders a rich and fascinating portrait of a man grappling with his faith and family.

The Invention of Air : A Story Of Science, Faith, Revolution, And The Birth Of America Steven Johnson New York, N.Y.: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2008
From the bestselling author of How We Got To Now, The Ghost Map and Farsighted, a new national bestseller: the “exhilarating”( Los Angeles Times) story of Joseph Priestley, “a founding father long forgotten”(Newsweek) and a brilliant man who embodied the relationship between science, religion, and politics for America's Founding Fathers. In The Invention of Air, national bestselling author Steven Johnson tells the fascinating story of Joseph Priestley—scientist and theologian, protégé of Benjamin Franklin, friend of Thomas Jefferson—an eighteenth-century radical thinker who played pivotal roles in the invention of ecosystem science, the discovery of oxygen, the uses of oxygen, scientific experimentation, the founding of the Unitarian Church, and the intellectual development of the United States. As he did so masterfully in The Ghost Map, Steven Johnson uses a dramatic historical story to explore themes that have long engaged him: innovative strategies, intellectual models, and the way new ideas emerge and spread, and the environments that foster these breakthroughs.

lgli/Sister Marya Grathwohl - This Wheel of Rocks (2023, Penguin Publishing Group).epub
This Wheel of Rocks : An Unexpected Spiritual Journey Sister Marya Grathwohl Penguin Publishing Group, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2023
The memoir of a Catholic nun’s spiritual journey that explores the deep connections between faith and the natural world Growing up in the Midwest, Judy Grathwohl never felt she belonged. “I belong out west,” she remembers telling her father. After joining the Sisters of St. Francis in the early 1960s and becoming Sister Marya, she came to realize that she craved a life beyond the traditional path of a Catholic nun. “Something other than dedicating my life to God was summoning me, some other life purpose,” she writes. It took several years and several detours, but when Sister Marya eventually was assigned by her order to the Northwest, she felt an immediate connection to the place and to its Native people, the Crow and Northern Cheyenne. Little by little, she was invited to become part of their communities, to share their customs and rituals, and eventually was adopted into one of their families. She came to understand that the blending of Catholic teachings and Native traditions helped build within her a deeper respect for the Earth—this wheel of rocks—that she could not have built on her own. In this intimate, revelatory memoir, Sister Marya recounts her own spiritual journey, her settling in Montana, how she—a Catholic nun from Ohio—came to be embraced by the Crow and Northern Cheyenne, and how their traditions prompted in her an expanding devotion to the land, its resources, and its connections to faith and God. Honest and eye-opening, funny and heartfelt, This Wheel of Rocks shows how living a spiritual life committed to preserving nature and community can be both fulfilling and productive.

Loving Edith Tannen, Mary New York: Riverhead Books, 1st Riverhead trade pbk. ed, New York, 1996, ©1995
Edith Seagrace has come to New York City from a small upstate town to begin her summer internship at Ubu magazine, a last outpost of literary sophistication and style. In all of Manhattan, she knows only one person, her flamboyant roommate, Clarence, and the two have hopes that this summer will be the kickoff of what they call Real Life. But there are others who know about Edith and await her arrival - her eccentric neighbor, who plans to reveal herself as the woman who gave birth to Edith twenty-one years ago; the ailing editor in chief of Ubu, who may or may not know he is Edith's father; and Edith's new boss, a woman who advocated an abortion all those years back to preserve order at the magazine. Though she is the last person on earth to recognize its effects, Edith has a charm, a certain something that draws people to her. Unwittingly, she becomes a lightning rod for the lost dreams and desires of this group of lonely sophisticates, and her presence forces them to reconsider decisions made and bargains struck long ago. With its deft wit and stylishly drawn characters, Loving Edith evokes the hot, dreamy enchantment of New York summers, the endless possibilities of being twenty-one, and the fleeting, brilliant allure of a second chance.

Flower Children: A Novel Maxine Swann New York, N.Y.: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2008
<p><P><b>&ldquo;A work of stunning lyricism and intense originality&rdquo;(Mary Gordon, author of <i>Pearl</i>).</b> From an award-winning short story writer comes this spare, lively, moving novel, quickly embraced by critics and readers, portraying the strangely celebrated and unsupervised childhood of four hippie offspring in the 1970s and 80s. Based on the author's own upbringing, <i>Flower Children</i> tells the story of four children growing up in rural Pennsylvania, impossibly at odds with their surroundings. In time, as the sheltered utopia their parents have created begins to collapse, the children long for structure and restraint&#151;and all their parents have avoided.</p><h3><Br>&#151; The New York Times - Michiko Kakutani</h3><p>Writing in lucid, crystalline prose that shifts back and forth from the first person to the third, Ms. Swann has expanded a short story that scooped up a handful of prizes (the O. Henry Award, the Pushcart Prize and Ploughshares' Cohen Award) and turned it into a small gem of a novel, a novel that showcases her eye for detail, her psychological acuity, her ability to conjure up a particular place and time.</p>

The surf guru : stories Doug Dorst New York: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2010
<p><P><b>A book of brilliant, adventurous stories from the award-winning Doug Dorst. </b> <P>With the publication of his debut novel, <i>Alive in Necropolis</i>, Doug Dorst was widely celebrated as one of the most creative, original literary voices of his generation-an heir to T.C. Boyle and Denis Johnson, a northern California Haruki Murakami. Now, in his second book, <i>The Surf Guru</i>, his full talent is on display, revealing an ability to explore worlds and capture characters that other writers have not yet discovered. <P>In the title story, an old surfing-champion-turned-surfwear- entrepreneur sits on his ocean-front balcony watching a new generation of surfers come of age on the waves, all but one of whom wear wet suits emblazoned with the Surf Guru's name. An acid-tongued, pioneering botanist who has been exiled from the academy composes a series of scurrilous (and hilarious) biographical sketches of his colleagues and rivals, inadvertently telling his own story. A pair of twenty-first- century drifters course through a series of unusual adventures in their dilapidated car, chased west out of one town and into the next, dreaming of hitting the Pacific. <P>Dorst's characters have all successfully cultivated a particular expertise, and yet they remain intent on moving toward the horizon, seeking hope in something new. Likewise, each of Dorst's stories is a virtuoso performance balancing humor and insight, achieving a perfect pitch, pulsing with a gritty and punchy, distinctly American realism- and yet always pushing on into the unexpected, taking us some place new.</p><h3>The New York Times - Robin Romm</h3><p>All of Dorst's stories brim with gumption. They're fun-loving, testosterone-rich yarns. And while his book is an amalgam of voices, moods, styles and forms&#8230;the stories speak to an important literary pursuit: that of pushing limits, of embracing challenge, no matter the gharials at your toes.</p>

The dreaming game : my extraordinary mother's life of passion, vision, and imagination Philip B. Kunhardt Jr. Riverhead Trade (Paperbacks), 1st Riverhead trade pbk. ed, New York, 2005, ©2004
<p>A loving and inspiring portrait of Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt, an extraordinary woman who brought an intensity and originality to the life around her.</p> <p><i>The Dreaming Game</i> is Philip B. Kunhardt's tribute to his mother, a woman of rare vision and intellect. Dorothy Kunhardt is best known as the author of the runaway bestseller Pat the Bunny, a revolutionary children's book in its time. But she was also a respected Lincoln scholar and biographer, and an inveterate chronicler of life, which she experienced as meaningfully and deeply as possible. And until she died in 1979, Kunhardt recorded everything around her-her early loves, her feelings about marriage and family, her perceptions about the world-in highly charged letters to her lifelong friend Katherine Strauss.</p> <p>These letters and a host of others, combined with her son's research and memories, provide entry for us into a unique life-one of privilege but also of awareness, of restrictions, and, at the same time, of a remarkable openness to life's possibilities. The Dreaming Game is an extremely moving tribute to a mother, wife, writer, and friend, who was not always easy to live with but whose originality and passion for living left their mark on those around her, and on children everywhere, and continue to serve as an inspiration for all of us.</p>

Snapshots : a novel Norris, William, 1972- Riverhead Hardcover, New York, New York State, 2001
"Snapshots is the story of an all-American Irish Catholic family - a story of love, fear, sexual awakening, emotional infidelities, and the simple difficulty of intimate communication. It begins on December 24, 1997, as Kate, Patty, Sean, and Nora Mahoney, all in their thirties now, are on their way home to the family's Jersey shore beach house. Beginning on this Christmas Eve, William Norris's highly original novel takes us backward in time, through twenty-five years of the Mahoneys' lives as a family, to discover how they came to be the people they are today.". "They seem to be the perfect family: an attorney and a schoolteacher living happily with their four children in an affluent New Jersey suburb. But as the author engages our endless fascination with what goes on behind other people's closed doors, he begins to lay bare the secrets the Mahoneys keep from themselves, and from one another.". "Kate is married and settled now, but she was always the rule-breaker, a gifted artistic prodigy who pushed all the limits. And she paid a price, the whole family did, for her extraordinary vision, as she struggled on the fringes of mental illness. A straight-A student, Patty could handle the liquor in high school, college, even med school. But now that she's a doctor, she's got to face her demon. Growing up in this Irish Catholic family, Nora never dreamed that they would accept her as she really was, and eventually welcome her partner, Eve, into their home. Although Sean was the son that Pat Mahoney had so much wanted, the boy was nothing like him, a son who would rather be in the kitchen cooking with his mother than playing baseball. But it's Liz Mahoney who has held the family together, even as she wonders what's become of her marriage, as her husband works eighty-hour weeks to make partner at the firm. She worries about the people her children are becoming."--BOOK JACKET.

Hope Duncan, Glen, 1965- Riverhead Hardcover, New York, New York State, 1998
This, the debut novel of British author Glen Duncan, sets the stage for what is to come in his body of work and is a very fine, ambitious debut novel in itself. An intimate, breathtaking, passionate first-person narrative voice, confiding confessional-style to you, reader, often, but telling you to "f-ck off" as it scents your inevitable judgment of the character. Unforgettable scenes, hyper-realized in their attention to detail. Off-the-cuff improvisations on topics connected to the narrative that are laugh-out-loud funny. Sentences so true and so perfectly put you want to share them with everyone you know. Existential musings. Daring engagement with some of the darkest of which humanity is capable. A steady character development that endears the characters to you, no matter what awful things they may do. A focus on a relationship so tender and beautiful and real that it eventually glows with the same warm light that the better memories of your own do. Sudden, jagged twists in the narrative that make you question whether you want to keep reading the book. A consistent literary, intelligent, highly allusive and effusive quality that answers that question, "YES," no matter how repelled you were moments ago. As a novel, it does not have much plot. It is a person's life, being written in pieces, jumping between the present and very recent and college days and childhood. It is alternating scenes and meditations. It attempts to honor the range in life and never cheat. There are many themes, but at its propulsive center is a love so good and so real that it defined the narrator's life, even as he was aware he did not "deserve" it. The fact that this love was lost, driven away, really, by the narrator, and his fall into an addiction, is what the narrator is trying to come to terms with, along with what to make of life, reality, and himself in the wake of its failing. In the process, he candidly engages in exorcising demons about sexual experiences that juxtapose the sanctity of those within the lost relationship's: experiences of horror eventually revealed from childhood and ongoing experiences with a prostitute who calls herself Hope, which interact with a history of the narrator's involvement with consuming pornography and the effects it has had on his psyche or soul. As an examination of human perversity and the duality of exalting sublime heights & horrifying wretched depths between which man finds himself cast, this novel finds Duncan with only Poe as a competitor.

Sorrow Floats (GroVont Trilogy, #2) Sandlin, Tim New York: Riverhead Books, 1st Riverhead trade pbk. ed., New York, New York State, 1997
Able storytelling and an engaging cast of dysfunctional modern American pilgrims animate this winning tale of the road. When tipsy, 23-year-old Maurey Pierce Talbot accidentally drives through her Wyoming town with her baby on the roof of her car, she realizes just how far she has sunk since her father's death left her distraught and almost unhinged. (She writes him daily picture postcards, knowing full well he is gone but unable to come to terms with her loss.) After attempting suicide and being thrown out by her philandering husband, she meets Lloyd and Shane, two recovering alcoholics who have devised a scheme to smuggle Coors beer to the East Coast. Longing to be reunited with her eight-year-old daughter Shannon in North Carolina (Sandlin chronicled Shannon's birth in Skipped Parts ), Maurey decamps on an unlikely odyssey, pulling a horse trailer full of beer behind a broken-down old ambulance, sipping Yukon Jack from the bottle as her companions search for AA meetings. Maurey is not yet ready to deal with her alcoholism or her reluctance to be loved, but the hardships of the road and the bonds that unite this group of refugees (others join them along the way) will change that. Maurey's wry, cocksure voice evokes both her cowgirl roots and the novel's '70s setting. Despite the bickering, sarcasm, cynicism and personal tragedy that season the lives of his colorful, credible characters, Sandlin fashions a convincing tale of redemption. - Publishers Weekly

When Daru Shezad is fired from his banking job in Lahore, he begins a decline that plummets the length of this sharply drawn, subversive tale. Before long, he can't pay his bills, and he loses his toehold among Pakistan's cell-phone-toting elite. Daru descends into drugs and dissolution, and, for good measure, he falls in love with the wife of his childhood friend and rival, Ozi—the beautiful, restless Mumtaz.Desperate to reverse his fortunes, Daru embarks on a career in crime, taking as his partner Murad Badshah, the notorious rickshaw driver, populist, and pirate. When a long-planned heist goes awry, Daru finds himself on trial for a murder he may or may not have committed. The uncertainty of his fate mirrors that of Pakistan itself, hyped on the prospect of becoming a nuclear player even as corruption drains its political will.Fast-paced and unexpected, Moth Smoke portrays a contemporary Pakistan as far more vivid and disturbing than the exoticized images of South Asia familiar to most of the West. This debut novel establishes Mohsin Hamid as a writer of substance and imagination.Created By Tshirtman

The Coma Alex Garland Penguin Publishing Group, 2010
When Carl awakens from a coma after being attacked on a subway train, life around him feels unfamiliar, even strange. He arrives at his best friend's house without remembering how he got there; he seems to be having an affair with his secretary, which is pleasant but surprising. He starts to notice distortions in his experience, strange leaps in his perception of time. Is he truly reacting with the outside world, he wonders, or might he be terribly mistaken? So begins a dark psychological drama that raises questions about the the human psyche, dream versus reality, and the boundaries of consciousness. As Carl grapples with his predicament, Alex Garland - author of The Beach and the screenplay for 28 Days Later , plays with conventions and questions our assumptions about the way we exist in the world, even as it draws us into the unsettling and haunting book about a lost suitcase and a forgotten identity.

Where did we come from? Where are we going? How do we get there? Many have asked these questions, and many have attempted to answer them. But there is another question Good Life, Good Death asks us to contemplate: how does the idea of life after death affect how we live our lives? Gelek Rimpoche tells stories of the mystical Tibet he lived in, as well as the contemporary America he is now a citizen of, and shares the wisdom of the great masters. He makes the connection between powerful emotions such as anger, obsession, jealousy and pride, and our past as well as our future.

Mr. Fox Helen Oyeyemi Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2011
Winner of the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for FictionOne of Granta's Best Young British NovelistsFrom the prizewinning young writer of What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, Gingerbread, and Peaces comes a brilliant and inventive story of love, lies, and inspiration.Fairy-tale romances end with a wedding, and the fairy tales don't get complicated. In this book, the celebrated writer Mr. Fox can't stop himself from killing off the heroines of his novels, and neither can his wife, Daphne. It's not until Mary, his muse, comes to life and transforms him from author into subject that his story begins to unfold differently.Mary challenges Mr. Fox to join her in stories of their own devising; and in different times and places, the two of them seek each other, find each other, thwart each other, and try to stay together, even when the roles they inhabit seem to forbid it. Their adventures twist the fairy tale into nine variations, exploding and teasing conventions of genre and romance, and each iteration explores the fears that come with accepting a lifelong bond. Meanwhile, Daphne becomes convinced that her husband is having an affair, and finds her way into Mary and Mr. Fox's game. And so Mr. Fox is offered a choice: Will it be a life with the girl of his dreams, or a life with an all-too-real woman who delights him more than he cares to admit? The extraordinarily gifted Helen Oyeyemi has written a love story like no other. Mr. Fox is a magical book, endlessly inventive, as witty and charming as it is profound in its truths about how we learn to be with one another.

The Teahouse Fire Ellis Avery New York: Riverhead Books, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2007
“Like attending seasons of elegant tea parties—each one resplendent with character and drama. Delicious.”—Maxine Hong KingstonThe story of two women whose lives intersect in late-nineteenth-century Japan, The Teahouse Fire is also a portrait of one of the most fascinating places and times in all of history—Japan as it opens its doors to the West. It was a period when wearing a different color kimono could make a political statement, when women stopped blackening their teeth to profess an allegiance to Western ideas, and when Japan's most mysterious rite—the tea ceremony—became not just a sacramental meal, but a ritual battlefield. We see it all through the eyes of Aurelia, an American orphan adopted by the Shin family, proprietors of a tea ceremony school, after their daughter, Yukako, finds her hiding on their grounds. Aurelia becomes Yukako's closest companion, and they, the Shin family, and all of Japan face a time of great challenges and uncertainty. Told in an enchanting and unforgettable voice, The Teahouse Fire is a lively, provocative, and lushly detailed historical novel of epic scope and compulsive readability.
